Top 24 Most Anticipated Movies of 2024

It may be a month late, but I was finally able to finish my list of most anticipated movies of 2024. There are only 11 months remaining, but as far as filmgoing is concerned, that’s pretty much all year. In fact, as you’ll find out soon enough, I might as well have held this list for another month (with one exception!)

If you haven’t already, you can check out my list of top 2023 movies here. And without further ado, here are my 24 most anticipated movies of 2024.

24. Ballerina

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Len Wiseman’s “Ballerina”.

Ana de Armas joins the John Wick franchise in its first spin-off. I ate up every second she was on screen in No Time to Die, and I’ve been a massive fan of hers since Blade Runner 2049, so count me in just based on that. Len Wiseman hasn’t exactly proven he can direct John Wick-level action, though, so I remain skeptical on that front.

Ballerina is scheduled to come out on June 7.

23. Kinds of Kindness

Yorgos Lanthimos Emma Stone

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness”

Kinds of Kindness is the latest collaboration between Yorgos Lanthimos and his Poor Things cast: Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Margaret Qualley, with new additions Jesse Plemons and Hong Chau. Originally I was going to leave this movie off the list, despite the fact that Poor Things cracked my top 10 of 2023 movies, as Kinds of Kindness is described as an anthology film telling several stories within it. I must admit, I’m not a fan of this format, which is why this movie ranks so low on this list and was almost removed from it. But I’d be lying to myself if I didn’t say I’m morbidly curious about what Yorgos Lanthimos is cooking up next.

Searchlight Pictures has yet to set a release date for Kinds of Kindness.

22. The Fall Guy

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: David Leitch’s “The Fall Guy”.

Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, and David Leitch teaming up? Yeah, count me in. The movie also seems rather personal for Leitch given the subject matter (stunt doubles). But yeah, it’s mostly Ryan Gosling being here that puts this movie on the list.

The Fall Guy comes out on May 3.

21. Deadpool 3

Deadpool 3

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Shawn Levy’s “Deadpool 3”

Every year I’m less and less excited about a new Marvel movie, which is too bad. But hey, if nothing else, Deadpool 3 at least will be a good time at the movies… Right? At least I hope so. Having Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds on screen together should at least give us that.

Deadpool 3 comes out on July 26.

20. Mickey 17

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17”

Bong Joon Ho’s next movie is one of the biggest mysteries of the year. Besides the still picture of Robert Pattinson they released so long ago, Warner Bros. has been able to keep the plot under wraps for this one. I liked Parasite and some of his other efforts, but it isn’t enough for me to get so excited about the director’s next movie without knowing more plot details — unlike what will happen with other movies on this list.

Mickey 17 is currently waiting for a new release date after being pushed from its original March date. It is expected to play at the Cannes Film Festival.

19. Drive-Away Dolls

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: “Drive-Away Dolls”

I’m a big fan of the Coen brothers, and even though this is coming from half the duo, the trailer was enough to raise my interest to the level of the Leo DiCaprio Django Unchained gif: “You had my curiosity, now you have my attention.” I’ve also been tracking the careers of its two leads, Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan, for years. I can’t wait to see them headlining an Ethan Coen/Tricia Cooke movie.

Drive-Away Dolls is coming out on February 23.

18. Wicked

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked”.

Musicals for the win! I’d be lying if I said I’m a big Wicked fan; in fact, I’ve barely heard of the story in it, let alone watched the on-stage musical. But there’s just something about this one that feels like it appeals directly to me. Also, I’m a big fan of the big-screen adaptation of In the Heights that Jon M. Chu directed. Plus this movie has Cynthia Erivo! There’s also the curiosity factor of seeing Ariana Grande in a major role in a film.

Wicked: Part One is targeting a November 27, 2024, release date. The sequel (which recently wrapped) will come out in 2025.

17. The Apprentice

The Apprentice Film Cast: Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump, Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn, and Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice”

Sebastian Stan stars as young Donald Trump in a movie about his crazy days in the 1970s-80s in the real estate business. Holy Spider and The Last of Us director Ali Abbasi is directing. I mean, this movie is obviously going to be polarizing, but I must admit that I’m extremely curious to see what they come up with. How much will the conversation around the 2024 election be about this movie?

The Apprentice has not been given a release date yet, but expect it around October to be relevant for the election.

16. Dreams (Michel Franco)

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Michel Franco’s “Dreams”.

Memory was one of my favorite movies of 2023, and the fact that Michel Franco is reuniting with Jessica Chastain for another film is nothing short of great news for me. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what they come up with together.

No release date has been set for Dreams.

15. Nosferatu

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu”.

Robert Eggers’ follow-up to The Northman has packed an all-star cast. Plus, it’s Robert Eggers, come on! At the very least, we’ll be seeing stuff we couldn’t be seeing anywhere else. Cannot wait.

Nosferatu is targeting a December 25 release date.

14. Queer

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer”.

Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name is one of the best feature films of the last 15 years. I genuinely believe that. Starting there, any movie he makes is automatically going up on this list. Plus, he’s teaming up with Daniel Craig to tell a, well, queer story. Two big things there: Craig doing a more risqué project, and Guadagnino going back to the homosexual roots of Call Me By Your Name. Let’s go!

Queer has not been given a release date yet, but reports out there say it will premiere during the Cannes Film Festival.

13. Challengers

Challengers

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers”.

Two Luca Gaudagnino movies back-to-back! Challengers already made the list last year (it was pushed due to the strikes), and after seeing that trailer, I obviously bumped it up a couple of spots. It was everything I hoped for and so much more.

Challengers is currently targeting an April 25 release.

12. A Quiet Place: Day One

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Michael Sarnoski’s “A Quiet Place: Day One”.

Lupita Nyong’o is starring in the first spin-off from John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place franchise. Also, Pig‘s Michael Sarnoski is directing. That seems like a pretty big combo alone, and though I’m not a big horror fan, I found both A Quiet Place movies utterly fantastic. Having these two on the project makes me not miss Krasinski and Emily Blunt immediately. We’ll see after the movie.

A Quiet Place: Day One will come out on June 28.

11. Gladiator 2

Paul Mescal joins Gladiator sequel

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator 2”.

Ridley Scott’s latest movies haven’t exactly been great. But Gladiator is one of my top 10 movies of all time, so going back to this story with the same creative team was always going to intrigue me. Plus, they have Paul Mescal? Yeah, I’ll be there day one!

Gladiator 2 is targeting a November 22 release date.

10. Civil War

Alex Garland's Civil War

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Alex Garland’s “Civil War”.

Alex Garland’s new film was sort of on my radar, but that trailer changed everything for me. It was so much more than I ever anticipated, and I cannot wait to see what he comes up with next. I have a feeling this could turn into a big conversation very soon, and I’m looking forward to it, but also very much not.

Civil War comes out on April 12.

9. The Materialists

Celine Song and Greta Lee on the set of Past Lives

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Celine Song’s “The Materialists”.

Celine Song’s feature debut Past Lives was my favorite movie of 2023. The fact that she’s doing another film in 2024 caught me off guard when I found out, but had me incredibly excited immediately. I cannot wait, even if little is known about the story or the cast.

The Materialists is coming out later this year via A24, though a release date has not been set.

8. Juror #2

Clint Eastwood

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Clint Eastwood’s “Juror #2”.

Clint Eastwood’s swan song has an incredible pitch: a juror finds out in the middle of a murder trial that he committed the crime someone else is being accused of. Will he come forward? That’s enough to get me excited, but then we couple that with the brilliant cast, I can’t wait: Nicholas Hoult, Zoey Deutch, Toni Collette, JK Simmons, Kiefer Sutherland, and more.

No release date has been set for Juror #2, though there is a small chance it could come out during Cannes.

7. Blitz

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Steve McQueen’s “Blitz”.

Steve McQueen’s new movie is already generating Best Picture buzz. I love 12 Years a Slave, so of course any new movie from McQueen has me very excited. My only worry is that it’s a World War II movie, and even though it’s a period in history I love exploring, I don’t know how many stories we can get from this time before there are too many.

Blitz has not been given a release date yet.

6. War of the Rohirrim

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Kenji Kamiyama’s “War of the Rohirrim”

I admit this is a strange pick for #6 on this list, but it is what it is. Lord of the Rings is a huge part of my life, and the fact that there is a new movie coming out soon is enough to push it into my top 10, especially as it’s going to tell a complementary story to the Peter Jackson films. I’m over the moon about Rings of Power season 2, and War of the Rohirrim will be a nice complement. The only thing that has me worried is that it’s already been pushed from April to December, so I could see this one coming out in 2025 after all.

War of the Rohirrim is currently targeting a December 13 release date.

5. Furiosa

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: George Miller’s “Furiosa”.

The trailer for this film was exactly what I expected, but also not… And that’s a good thing because it teased more story than I expected while still feeling distinctively within the world of the 2015 predecessor/successor. Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the best action movies of all time, there’s no question about that, and the buzz around this movie has always been through the roof.

Furiosa is currently targeting a May 24 release date.

4. Inside Out 2

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Pixar’s “Inside Out”.

2015’s Inside Out is my favorite film the studio ever made, and though making a sequel can sometimes be a bit of a head-scratcher when your first film is that good, in this case, it always made sense to me to do another one. Inside Out 2 comes out in June, and I’ll be there day one!

Inside Out 2 is targeting a June 14 date.

3. Megalopolis

Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited passion project wrapped last year and will reportedly be ready to come out this year, possibly as soon as during Cannes. It’s safe to say that the new (and probably last) film from one of America’s best directors that was able to pack in a giant cast of who’s who is going to be very near the top. I can’t wait for us to get our first look at Megalopolis.

Megalopolis does not have a release date yet, but it’s expected to debut in Cannes.

2. Joker 2

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie à Deux”.

Joker was one of my favorite movies back in 2019, and though I haven’t revisited much since then, the prospect of going back and now bringing in Lady Gaga to play Harley Quinn has always intrigued me. I admit I’m too optimistic about this one, partly because it’s sort of a musical, and I love those, but also because I want to believe that there was something that attracted everyone back to this project other than money.

Joker: Folie à Deux is coming out on October 4.

1. Dune: Part Two

Top 24 most anticipated movies of 2024: Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two”.

Denis Villeneuve’s epic sequel is not only one of the first films to come out this year from this list, but it’s also my most anticipated one. The film was pushed from a late 2023 date due to the strikes (and not, as most of us thought a couple of years ago, because of the tight schedule it had to film), but it was already #2 last year for me, and it couldn’t be any other way.

Dune: Part Two comes out on March 1.
