‘Drive-Away Dolls’: First Trailer Revealed for Ethan Coen’s Solo Directorial Debut, Starring Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan

(L to R) Margaret Qualley as “Jamie” and Geraldine Viswanathan as “Marian” in director Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls.

The first trailer for Ethan Coen’s solo directorial debut has dropped. Drive-Away Dolls stars Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan as two young girls whose journey to Tallahassee will soon become a whole adventure when they discover the car they rented holds a briefcase of great importance to a group of criminals.

As seen in the trailer below, the film combines Quentin Tarantino vibes with Ethan Coen’s dialogue and sense of humor:

This is the official synopsis for the film:

“Written by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, this comedy caper follows Jamie (Qualley), an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian (Viswanathan) who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way. Directed by Ethan Coen.”

It’s definitely been quite a week for trailers, and we’re closing it out with a big one. The cast also includes Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp, and Matt Damon. Ethan Coen is writing the script along with his wife, Tricia Cooke; they both are producers as well, along with Robert Graf, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner.

It hasn’t been announced yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised if this got a screening at the Venice Film Festival. However, even though the film was looking like a potential awards contender from the cast and crew involved, after watching the trailer it doesn’t seem that way anymore. Comedies have traditionally a hard time rallying people behind them, but we wouldn’t rule out a screenplay nomination given Coen’s track record. Acting nominations are probably not likely, however, even if the talent deserves it.

Drive-Away Dolls will open in theaters on September 22. Focus Features is distributing in the US, while Universal is handling the worldwide rights.
