Marvel Studios Coming to San Diego Comic-Con 2022

Marvel Studios San Diego Comic-Con 2019 Phase 4 Announcements

Despite recent rumblings about Marvel Studios possibly skipping San Diego Comic-Con this year to focus on D23 in September, Kevin Feige announced today they will be taking over Hall H.

During a press conference for Thor: Love and Thunder, Feige said the following (via ComicBook.com):

“We’ll be at Comic-Con next month, which we’re excited about. First time since we were on stage there three years ago talking about this movie and many others. And now, I think, almost, not everything but almost everything we discussed three years ago, that was released so we are excited to go and talk about the future.”

He is referring to the massive presentation they did in 2019 when they announced the full slate of Phase 4 movies, from Black Widow to Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as new details on some of the series they were developing. With the release of Love and Thunder in two weeks, that slate is now complete, so it’s time for them to make more announcements. This is something Feige already teased in an interview with Total Film Magazine recently, but it wasn’t clear if they would be making them at Comic-Con or D23 in September. Marvel will be sharing a 90-minute panel with Lucasfilm on September 10 at D23 Expo, so it makes sense that they split the weight of their announcements between SDCC and D23, to give Lucasfilm more time to give their presentation.

In that Total Film interview, Feige teased that there is some clarification coming in regards to how all of these projects relate to each other, and how they are building up a new saga, beginning with Phase 4. The studio has plenty of series in the early stages of development, some that have been officially announced, and some that for now have just been reported. As for the movies, they will probably announce a November 3, 2023, release date for Blade, and discuss the fourth Captain America movie, the sequel to Shang-Chi, and maybe even address Fantastic Four and Deadpool 3.

Fantastic Four

While a director may not have been found for the former when SDCC happens, Feige could confirm that John Krasinski will be reprising the role of Mr. Fantastic from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As for the latter, we know the writers are working on it, so an acknowledgment from Marvel Studios could be fun. We could also get more information on Eternals 2, Doctor Strange 3, or what will happen with Wanda going forward. Feige also teased last year that they are working on a non-Black Widow-related movie with Scarlett Johansson, so they could discuss that as well.

James Gunn also teased on Twitter he might be appearing there. Gunn has multiple projects to promote, from the animated series of shorts I am Groot, coming to Disney Plus on August 10, to the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and finally Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Years ago, he was reportedly going to oversee the cosmic side of Marvel Studios, and with a Nova project in the works, they could be announcing Gunn’s involvement with them beyond Vol. 3.

San Diego Comic-Con will take place from Thursday, July 21, to Sunday, July 24. Typically, Marvel Studios holds their panel on Saturday, so look forward to that on the 23rd. We will keep you posted as more information comes out on the matter.
