‘Wonder Man’ Disney Plus Series Finally Acknowledged by Marvel Studios

Since being reported last June, there has been next to no official word from Marvel Studios about the development of a Wonder Man series for Disney Plus. However, after months of silence, a Marvel producer has finally spoken out about it.

In an interview with ComicBook.com regarding the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, producer Stephen Broussard started by stating the obvious — the cat is now out of the bag, and the world is already aware that Marvel is developing a Wonder Man series. But then, he went into a bit more detail:

“Destin is doing a television show for us called ‘Wonder Man’. I think that’s out there in the world.

“[‘Wonder Man’ will] be definitely influenced by the comics. One of the things that we’re excited about it is that it’s going to feel very unique. It’s not going to feel like anything you’ve quite seen in the MCU before. And the kind of stories we can tell on Disney Plus, which has been fun. Like streaming, serialized storytelling is a totally different muscle. So, we’re having a blast making that one.”

Wonder Man vs. Iron Man

Even though this is the first time anyone from Marvel Studios acknowledges development on the series, we do know a few things about it. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will reportedly be joining the MCU to play Simon Williams/Wonder Man, a stunt double and/or actor trying to make it in Hollywood. He is repped by Bob Odenkirk, who could even play an antagonistic role in the series, and the overall tone of the show will reportedly be a Hollywood satire, with recent rumors pointing to the show’s central question being “What would Hollywood look like if real superheroes existed?” and Marvel being inspired by HBO’s Barry to set that tone. One additional detail — Ben Kingsley will return as Trevor Slattery in a key role, reprising the role from Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi. According to rumors from Daniel Richtman, the series could be up to 10 episodes long.

The show could start rolling cameras as soon as this March if Production Weekly is to be believed, and would be released either towards the end of the year or in early 2024. According to a recent report by Discussing Film, James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) will be directing for the series, which already recruited Andrew Guest as showrunner and main writer and Destin Daniel Cretton as executive producer and likely director. Cretton has an overall deal with Disney Plus, under which Wonder Man came to be, and is also developing a sequel to Shang-Chi and will direct the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Marvel currently has in production the Disney Plus series Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Daredevil: Born Again, which is returning to New York City. In the pipeline for Disney Plus are Secret Invasion, which is rumored to be targeting a May release date, and Loki season 2, coming out this summer. Echo was also supposed to debut this summer, but has been pushed back to a yet-unspecified date. Scheduled to come this fall is Ironheart, which will see Dominique Thorne reprising the role of Riri Williams from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
