Disney and Pixar Announce ‘Toy Story 5’, ‘Frozen 3’, and ‘Zootopia 2’

Toy Story Frozen Zootopia
Disney and Pixar are hitting the ground running this year with the announcement that several of their billion-dollar animation franchises (Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia) are getting sequels.

Deadline covered Disney’s latest quarterly earnings call. That presentation had Bob Iger report a rough quarter for Disney Plus, with the streaming service losing 2.4 million subscribers in the last three months (the first-ever quarterly loss for the streaming service, which successfully disrupted the industry when it burst onto the scene in November 2019), and he also announced that over 7000 employees are expected to be laid off amid a reorganization for Disney and its sub-companies.

The good news is that they had an “in case of bad financial news, break glass” announcement ready with the reveal that three of their biggest animated franchises are getting new installments. Today, it was officially revealed by Iger that Toy Story 5Frozen 3, and Zootopia 2 are in the pipeline at Disney and Pixar. Here’s what he had to say:

“Today, I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia. We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”

The news came at an opportune time, given that Disney also announced plans to reduce $5.5 billion in spending, including $3 billion in content costs. The move also comes after Disney and Pixar’s recent theatrical efforts have struggled, with films like Lightyear and Strange World both performing well below expectations. Such an announcement is likely to reassure investors that Disney’s commitment to the theatrical business and their dominance of the box office will continue well into the future.

Expect more news on Toy Story 5Frozen 3, and Zootopia 2 at Disney D23 Expo later this year, which will mark the centennial celebration of the Hollywood empire that started with a mouse. That convention will likely be similarly huge for the likes of Marvel Studios and the Star Wars franchise, along with 20th Century Studios, FX, and the other companies within Disney’s stable.
