‘Spider-Man Noir’ Series From Lord and Miller in Development at Amazon

Spider-Man Noir

Sony and Amazon are continuing their partnership to bring more Spider-Man tie-in stories to life.

According to Variety, Prime Video is developing a live-action series focused on the character of Spider-Man Noir, who audiences first met on the screen during 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Oren Uziel is on board as showrunner and executive producer, with Into/Across the Spider-Verse executive producers and writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, as well as Sony’s Amy Pascal, also on board.

The story would be centered in 1930s New York City, and would follow an “older, grizzled superhero” that will not be Peter Parker. The series would be set in its own universe, according to the trade. It will be the second live-action series packaged at Amazon by Sony, following the announcement of Silk: Spider Society moving forward at the streamer with showrunner Angela Kang attached. Multiple other series are reportedly in the early stages of development.

The timing of the news is especially interesting, dropping four months before Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theaters, and just a few weeks after Nicolas Cage revealed that he will not be reprising the role of Spider-Man Noir in that film. It’s obviously unknown at this point if both matters are related, especially since Across the Spider-Verse has been in development since 2019, long before we had any knowledge of Amazon and Sony partnering for live-action Spider-Man-adjacent series.

However, the character description provided by Variety could match Cage’s if the producers decided to go that route. The actor has been in a bit of a resurgence later, following a great reception to his performance in Pig, which some argued could have landed him an Oscar nomination, and later in the box office failure but critical hit The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

Further details on the Spider-Man Noir series are currently under wraps. It’s likely that Sony and Amazon are focusing on Silk first, a series on which we should get some news in the coming months. We are probably looking at a 2024 release date for that, with Noir possibly coming out the year after.
