‘Ironheart’ Disney Plus Series Hires Two Directors, Ryan Coogler to Executive Produce

Ironheart

The upcoming Ironheart Disney Plus series is rounding up its crew.

From The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios has hired Samantha Bailey (Dear White People) and Angela Barnes (Mythic Quest, Atlanta season 4) as directors for the upcoming show, which is set to start rolling cameras this June in Atlanta. Bailey will be directing the first three episodes, and Barnes, the last three. Also, according to a story that The Wrap posted last week, the show will introduce newcomer Harper Anthony in a role that is being kept under wraps. In addition, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is joining the project as executive producer, a move that makes sense, since he will be the one to introduce the character into the MCU.

Indeed, Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart, will first appear in the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She will be played by Dominique Thorne, as Kevin Feige announced over a year ago. This is pretty much all we know about the upcoming sequel to the 2018 billion-dollar hit. Coogler is also working on other projects for Disney Plus, as the streamer is developing a Wakanda-based spin-off series as well as an Okoye-centered show that is different from the Wakanda project. Coogler’s banner, Proximity Media, signed a five-year contract with Disney last year to develop Disney Plus series.

Besides Thorne, the cast includes Anthony Ramos (In the Heights) in a mystery but key role, Lyric Ross (This is Us), and is also looking to introduce the first transgender character into the MCU. The team would be actively looking to cast that part now (we may find out more soon). Chinaka Hodge is the head writer and an executive producer of the show, alongside the classic Marvel team of Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, and Victoria Alonso. Brad Winderbaum, who also executive produced Moon Knight and Hawkeye, as well as some previous MCU entries, and Zoie Nagelhout, who was an executive producer on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, will also be credited as executive producers.
