‘Ironheart’ Taps Lyric Ross as Riri Williams’ Best Friend
Lyric Ross, who has made a name for herself on NBC’s This Is Us, is joining the new Disney Plus series Ironheart as Riri Williams’ best friend.
The Hollywood Reporter posted the news late Friday, and also confirmed that the show will start production in June. The cast so far includes Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams/Ironheart, and Anthony Ramos playing an unknown but key character — THR is saying now that he could be playing the antagonist of the series. The original Deadline report mentioned that he had landed a significant role in the MCU beyond Ironheart.
Williams is a teenage genius with an intellect on par with Tony Stark’s — in the comics, she graduated from MIT at 15 and built her own Iron Man costume, and eventually took over this character’s role in the Marvel universe. It is unknown if this will happen in the MCU as well, but the franchise has certainly been making room for some young blood these past few years — besides Ironheart, Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel will enter the MCU this year with her own Disney Plus series, America Chavez is debuting in Doctor Strange 2, and Kate Bishop just made her debut in Hawkeye, which could lead to her eventually taking over that characters’ mantle.
Ross’ performance in This Is Us has been highly praised for years, which is very impressive, given that show also includes Sterling K. Brown, one of the most talented actors working today (and who is no stranger to the MCU, after he played N’Jobu in Black Panther).
Dominique Thorne will make her debut as Riri Williams/Ironheart in the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, coming this November. Production on her own series will begin in June in Atlanta — it could debut on the streaming service next year. In 2022, the Marvel Disney Plus slate is full, with Moon Knight coming next (March 30th), and after that, She-Hulk, starring Tatiana Maslany, and Ms. Marvel, starring Iman Vellani. Secret Invasion could potentially debut at the end of the year, though an early 2023 release date is more realistic at this moment.
