‘Uncharted’ Trailer Puts a Fresh Spin on the Source Material

Tom Holland stars in Uncharted

It’s not Drake’s Fortune, but it’s feeling like Uncharted alright.

Right at the start of the year, we received an official look at Tom Holland as young Nathan Drake in Sony and PlayStation Productions’ Uncharted film adaptation. Since then, things have been extremely silent, and details… nowhere to be found. The only thing remotely close to an official update was yet another delay for the Ruben Fleischer-directed adventure flick, which now sits on a weird February 18, 2022, release date.

With the second Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer looming on the horizon, Sony Pictures has finally decided to drop the first look at Uncharted, and it doesn’t look as bland as most of us expected. Check it out below:

It’s great to see some genuine chemistry between Holland and Mark Wahlberg, who, despite the lack of footage, was the “weak link” for many Uncharted fans since he was cast in the role of Sully. Mind you, it still feels like an action flick baked inside Sony Pictures’ due-for-an-upgrade oven, but Fleischer has developed solid action and comedy chops over the years. The script is another story, and we won’t know for sure about the final result until it comes out, but recent test screenings have reportedly been quite positive, so there might be hope after all for one of the longest and messiest rollercoaster rides to production in recent Hollywood history.

Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Venom) landed the directing gig after years of filmmakers coming and going. The final script, after countless iterations, was penned by Matt Holloway (Morbius) and Art Marcum (Men in Black: International). Tom Holland stars as Nathan Drake, with Mark Wahlberg filling the shoes of Sully, his mentor. They’re joined by Antonio Banderas, Tati Gabrielle, and Sophia Ali, among others.

2022 is PlayStation Productions’ make-or-break year, as both Uncharted and a The Last of Us TV series, arguably the two most recognizable IPs in Sony’s library of games right now, are hitting cinemas and HBO respectively after years of high expectations and bumps in the road.
