Ana de Armas in Talks to Star in ‘John Wick’ Spinoff ‘Ballerina’

A Ballerina spin-off was reported to be in development two years ago, shortly after the debut of John Wick: Chapter 3, but the project was thought to be dead by now. Apparently, it’s not.

Deadline reported yesterday that the Lionsgate spin-off movie may be about to attach a lead actress, as Ana de Armas is in negotiations to star as a deadly assassin seeking revenge against the people that murdered her family. The character was first introduced in 2019’s third installment of the John Wick saga.

Shay Hatten, who wrote Chapter 3 and Army of the Dead, is scribing the project, with Len Wiseman on board to direct. Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Chad Stahelski are producing the movie, as well as Brady Fujikawa and Chelsea Kujawa, who are overseeing for Lionsgate. Deadline is also saying that, while they haven’t signed yet, the studio hopes to have appearances from Keanu Reeves and Anjelica Huston, who played the director of the Ballerina program in Chapter 3.

Ana de Armas is on a roll lately, from being a standout in 2017’s Blade Runner 2049, a movie that included Harrison Ford, Jared Leto, Ryan Gosling, and Robin Wright, to perhaps delivering the best performance inside Knives Out, a movie that had such a crazy cast it’s not even worth listing it. She can currently be seen in an extended sequence in the James Bond movie No Time to Die, which some fans as myself are hoping will be the launching point of a spin-off series for Amazon Prime. But that’s not all — next year she will be, once again, sharing screentime with both Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in the Russos’ latest action-adventure: The Gray Man, on Netflix.

Keanu Reeves will be back as John Wick in next year’s Chapter 4, which is currently scheduled for a May release. He will next be seen in this December’s The Matrix Resurrections.
