‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ Second Trailer

Angelina Jolie Maleficent
It hasn’t been that long since the last trailer for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, but Disney clearly want ads for both this and Mulan playing in front of all screenings of The Lion King, so the two of them arrived this week, well ahead of the release of that film.

The villain-focused remake of Sleeping Beauty did a bit of revisionist history with the original movie, more or less showing that Maleficent herself was a victim of circumstance who put the king’s daughter, Princess Aurora, under a spell as a way of getting revenge for him taking her wings. The movie then flipped the script in the second half of the film by having her genuinely grow to care about Aurora and working to undo the spell, while Prince Phillip, the typical protagonist of the story, doesn’t get to be the hero in spite of his best efforts. Maleficent regains her wings defeats the evil king (who disposes of himself), and Maleficent’s love of Aurora breaks the curse as she becomes queen.

A while later, Phillip (portrayed by a different actor than in the original film) asks for Aurora’s hand in marriage, which Maleficent has reservations about. Things only get worse when she actually meets Phillip’s parents, at which point it becomes apparent that she’s not going to stand for any marriage and willingly makes enemies with Phillip’s family. Maleficent assembles armies of magical beings in order to topple a regime which does not have Aurora’s best interests in mind, and the two factions wage war as she embraces her role as a villain in order to protect the child that she loves.

The film’s official synopsis is as follows:

A formidable queen causes a rift between Maleficent and Princess Aurora. Together, they must face new allies and enemies in a bid to protect the magical lands which they share.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil opens on October 18, 2019.
