Amazon Studios In Talks Over ‘God of War’ TV Series

Buoyed by the recent success of fantasy shows like The Wheel of Time and excitement over their upcoming Lord of the Rings series, Amazon are in talks to expand their portfolio and develop a God of War TV series adaption of the popular PlayStation video game franchise.

According to Deadline, the series is being helmed by The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby, plus The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins. They all will work with Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions; this collaboration is standard for any adaption of a PlayStation franchise. It is also expected that Amazon Studios will co-produce with Sony, but there has been no official comment on that front.

As it is so early in negotiations, there are no story or casting details in place yet. It seems unlikely that the series would kick off with the Norse storyline that began in the 2018 PS4 game, despite that one acting as a soft reboot for the series. A key part of Kratos’ (the aforementioned God of War) story is his history with the Ancient Greek gods, so it seems likely that the series will cover those exploits instead. There’s even a prequel game that details Kratos’ backstory as a Spartan soldier before he became the Greek God of War, so Amazon could start their story there if they wanted to.

Wherever they land though, there is potential for this to be a big winner for Amazon Studios. The 2018 God of War game is widely considered to be one of the best blockbuster PlayStation games of all time, so there is plenty of rich dramatic material for them to mine; and if we look at the older games, there’s plenty of epic, blood-soaked Greek adventures to draw inspiration from. This news comes off the back of a major recruitment drive for video game adaptions at Amazon Studios, after news broke that they are developing a Fallout TV series starring Walton Goggins, and developing a Mass Effect show too.

It’s not the first video game adaption from PlayStation Productions either; their live action movie adaption of the Uncharted franchise, starring Tom Holland, debuted in theatres last month, while a series adaption of The Last of Us has entered its final stage of filming for HBO, plus a live-action movie adaption of Ghost of Tsushima is also in the works. It’s an exciting time to be a PlayStation gamer.
