‘I Am Legend’ Sequel Officially in the Works with Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan

I am Legend

Warner Bros. is returning to their I Am Legend IP.

Deadline broke last week the news about the studio working on a unexpected sequel to the 2007 post-apocalyptic movie loosely based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. Akiva Goldsmith would be back to write, with Will Smith starring in and producting the project. But he wouldn’t be alone now, as Michael B. Jordan is also attached to both star in and produce the sequel, which would mark their first collaboration as actors and producers.

Both Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan then confirmed the news on their Instagram accounts, posting the following picture:

No director is attached to the project as of this moment. Fans of the original movie know that it had a rather definitive ending, with (SPOILERS!) the global pandemic being put to rest when Will Smith sacrificed himself to save Alice Braga and her on-screen son, who would take the cure to the survivors in the outside world.

While this was the ending that was presented in theaters to audiences worldwide, the filmmakers shot an alternate ending that can be seen online here, in which Will Smith survived and the pandemic was not explicitly ended. This could be a jumping-off point for the sequel, though it would definitely be a bold move from the studio, given that most audiences probably are not familiar with this ending.

Another possibility is that Will Smith’s role in the movie will be limited, and that he’ll be guiding Michael B. Jordan through the video-diary he kept during the events of the first movie. Maybe there’s a new pandemic, and now Michael B. Jordan is the one that has to find a cure, inspired by Smith’s actions in the first installment.

Whatever the case may be, we will find out soon enough. Since all deals are in place now, this project could move rather quickly, and filming could begin as soon as late 2022. We will keep you posted as more news emerge on this new (and surprising) project.
