‘Ballerina’ and ‘Mickey 17’ Move Into 2025, ‘The Crow’ Reboot Coming Summer 2024

Mickey 17 and Ballerina move into 2025

Two of my most anticipated movies of this year have been knocked out of the schedule before we even reach the end of February. On Tuesday, Warner Bros. announced they’d be releasing Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 on January 31, 2025, almost a full year after it was originally supposed to come out. Today, Lionsgate has pushed Ballerina into next summer, with The Crow reboot taking its spot.

Let’s break it down. The Mickey 17 delay is certainly worrisome. Robert Pattinson leads the mystery movie, which has been eagerly anticipated by film fans for years. However, in a recent Variety report on larger Warner Bros. developments, it was mentioned that the film is perhaps not meeting the studio’s internal expectations. Originally, a March date was planned. It was then removed from the calendar, and the speculation was that WB wanted to take it to Cannes and release it later in the fall.

That is still possible, and Variety may have it wrong. Perhaps the January 2025 wide release could happen after a limited release in December that would suffice for the film to qualify for the next Oscars. At the same time, if recent years have taught us something in terms of awards campaigning is that waiting for the very last minute to drop your film is not idea — tell that to The Iron Claw, for instance. Whatever is going on here is certainly suspicious. Even more interesting? The film’s whopping $150M budget.

Elsewhere at Lionsgate, executives are rethinking their blockbuster strategy. The first John Wick big-screen spin-off, Ballerina, which stars Ana de Armas and that is also supposed to bring in main-franchise veterans including Keanu Reeves and the late Lance Reddick, is no longer going to be released this summer. According to TheWrap, the studio wants to maximize the impact of their action sequences, which they believe are not on par with previous installments. Director Len Wiseman will be receiving external help from John Wick director Chad Stahelski to punch up the action.

Ballerina is now set for a June 6, 2025, date, moving away from its planned June 7, 2024, date. Another film will be taking that place, though: the Bill Skarsgård-led, long-long-in-development reboot of The Crow, from director Rupert Sanders, which Lionsgate acquired for distribution last year. Lionsgate has also dated an untitled Guy Ritchie movie starring Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Eiza González, for January 17, 2025.
