Emma Stone Circling Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Save the Green Planet’ Remake, Filming in June

Emma Stone Yorgos Lanthimos Poor Things

Emma Stone can’t have enough of Yorgos Lanthimos. After reuniting with him on -and producing- Poor Things, the duo has become the hottest actor-director pairing in town. Now, as Lanthimos prepares to shoot a new movie, news has come out that Emma Stone may also be a part of it.

The project is the English-language remake of the South Korean fantasy comedy Save the Green Planet. In the original story, per Variety, “a disillusioned young man who captures and tortures a businessman whom he believes to be part of an alien invasion. A battle of wits ensues between the captor, his devoted girlfriend, the businessman, and a private detective.” According to World of Reel, the movie is gearing up for a June shoot.

The trade is saying that Stone would be playing a supporting role, though there’s really no reason for the lead role to have been gender-flipped. Daniel Richtman first provided details on the project on his Patreon page back in November, where he said that Stone was up for the female lead.

Stone is currently up, and one of the top contenders for the Best Actress Oscar. She’s also a part of this fall’s Kinds of Kindness, an anthology film that reunites a lot of the Poor Things team but with new additions like Jesse Plemons. They have also shot a secret movie in Greece, and perhaps even a short film titled Bleat (it’s unclear whether these last two are the same project). If so, Save the Green Planet would be their sixth time working together, and the fifth in a row.

As far as Stone is concerned, we should probably put to rest any developments on Cruella 2, which was once supposed to shoot in 2023. The actress has probably moved on from IP-driven titles and has found a haven in independent and thought-provoking films. She’s also become a prolific producer, having backed two of the biggest titles coming out of Sundance: I Saw the TV Glow and Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain.

No studio is attached yet to Save the Green Planet, though we certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see Searchlight back on board. Ari Aster’s Square Peg, and Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe via Element Pictures are producing, along with CJ ENM (previously CJ Entertainment). Though Variety didn’t say, I also wouldn’t be shocked to see Stone produce the project too.
