‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ First Trailer Introduces Plethora of Spider-Variants

Miles Morales and his multiverse gang of spider-variants are coming back to the big screen next year in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the first of the two sequels to 2018’s Best Animated Feature winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. With only six more months to go, Sony Pictures has released a brand-new look at the animated film.

The official synopsis for the film reads as follows:

“After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man [Morales] is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.”

In an interview with Total Film Magazine, co-director Kemp Powers explained that the new movie will be more Gwen Stacy-focused than the first. Hailee Steinfeld is returning to voice the character, who faces a puzzling situation:

“[‘Across the Spider-Verse’ explores] the unique dilemma of being Gwen Stacy. She’s a vigilante seen as responsible for the death of her world’s Peter Parker. [And the] cop in charge of tracking her down is her father.”

Powers also explained how The Spot, voiced by Jason Schwartzman, will be the villain of the two upcoming films, and teased a connection to the main character:

“The Spot is an interesting villain because he seems like a joke, but when you really look at his powers, there’s incredible potential. His ability to open portals across dimensions sets him up perfectly for the Spider-Verse. He’s the villain of the next two films… and let’s just say that the Spot and Miles are connected in surprising ways.”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will debut in theaters on June 2, 2023, starting an intense month for franchise fans — June will also include the release of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, The Flash, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
