‘Coyote vs. ACME’ Recruits John Cena, James Gunn Producing

It’s been a while since we last heard about the Coyote vs. ACME live-action/animation hybrid film, but production shouldn’t be too far off now.

John Cena, who is on a roll as of late, is joining the off-beat project, Deadline has reported. Details on his role are unknown at this point, but we’re 99% sure he’ll be the main live-action star of the film. Dave Green (TMNT: Out of the Shadows) will direct, with a screenplay from Samy Burch.

Back when the project was first announced, word was that James Gunn was penning the film, but he’s nowhere to be found in this announcement, so maybe he dropped out of the position long ago, as he’s been working on way too many projects recently. He’s sticking around as a producer with Chris DeFaria though.

The news arrives alongside the announcement of a Season 2 renewal for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad spinoff series Peacemaker, which has released its final Season 1 episode today. The show has been a resounding success with audiences and critics alike, currently sitting at 95% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Moreover, James Gunn recently said conversations are happening about a second companion series to The Suicide Squad for HBO Max, but he refused to share further details. Ratcatcher 2, arguably the sweetest character in the 2021 film, could be a good candidate to headline a new spinoff — actor Daniela Melchior has openly expressed interest in returning to the universe.

Back to Coyote vs. ACME, its current synopsis reads as follows:

The film follows Wile E. Coyote, who after ACME products fail him one too many times in his dogged pursuit of the Roadrunner, decides to hire a billboard lawyer to sue the ACME Corporation. The case pits Wile E. and his lawyer against the latter’s intimidating former boss (Cena), but a growing friendship between man and cartoon stokes their determination to win.

This could very well be a surprise hit from Warner after some mediocre Looney Tunes-packed live-action/animation efforts from the company. It also reminds us of the similar film that Disney Plus is receiving on May 20: Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, an action-comedy adventure which promises a surprising twist which nobody was expecting and plenty of sharp meta-commentary.
