Paramount Outlines Franchise-Driven Theatrical and Streaming Plans, Including New ‘Star Trek’ and ‘A Quiet Place’ Movies

Paramount

During the last investor’s meeting, Paramount has made sure to keep the interest of their shareholders alive by announcing a packed slate of new content from their most recognizable IPs.

For starters, Paramount’s Brian Robbins and director/producer J. J. Abrams announced that a fourth movie in Abrams’ continuity is coming, and according to Deadline, the studio has begun talks with the main stars to reprise their roles, including Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg. The movie could start filming towards the end of the year and make the December 2023 date they have set. WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman will direct the movie, and he is currently supervising a script by Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires, based off a draft by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Meanwhile, Paramount+ is preparing for the arrival of the Star Trek: Discovery spin-off series Strange New Worlds on May 5:

Another sequel coming from Paramount is John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place Part III, the threequel that will presumably continue the story of the 2018 and 2021 movies that already blew up the box office twice. Krasinski made the announcement during the event, though he would not confirm if he’ll be directing or writing again. No actors have been confirmed either, though the main cast from Part II should be able to come back. This is a different project from next year’s spin-off movie, which will be directed by Michael Sarnoski, and produced by Krasinski. We will have to wait until 2025 for Part III.

Another franchise getting a threequel is Sonic the Hedgehog. Weeks before the release of the sequel to 2020’s surprise hit, Paramount has already given the green light to a third installment that will be released theatrically in a yet-unspecified date. And that’s not all, as Idris Elba will come back next year to voice Knuckles in a live-action series exclusive to Paramount+. The character will make its debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, out on April 8, 2022.

The Transformers franchise also received some love during the presentation, with the company saying Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will be theatrically released in 2023. A new animated series will arrive this fall on Nickelodeon, and in 2024, the company will release in theaters a brand-new CG animated movie too.

In other news, Seth Rogen and Nickelodeon will produce a CG animated reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that will be theatrically released on Aug. 11, 2023. According to Paramount, the movie will be followed by “a series of villain-driven Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films exclusively for Paramount Plus”. Rogen confirmed the news on Twitter and shared what is seemingly a page out of Leonardo’s book that includes references to his peers and their friend April O’Neil.

Also, in more kid-oriented news, Paramount has announced development on three new character-driven movies in the SpongeBob universe that will be coming exclusively to Paramount+, as well as a brand-new theatrical movie coming soon. A live-action Dora the Explorer series is also in development for Paramount+, set to continue the tone of 2019’s live-action theatrical movie. No more details have been provided.

In video game news, the Halo live-action series has received a season 2 renewal before the release of the first season. News on this came out a couple of weeks ago, with THR saying back then that they were looking at changing showrunners again.

News on awards-targeted projects were also announced during the presentation. For starters, the Yellowstone universe from Taylor Sheridan is expanding, with Paramount+ ordering new episodes on the 1883 prequel series, and announcing a new 1932 series that will follow a new generation of Duttons “during the time of western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression.”

Paramount+ has also announced the release date of their new series The Offer, starring Miles Teller, which will tell the behind-the-scenes story of the making of The Godfather. They have also released the first teaser trailer (which can be seen below).

And finally, Paramount will distribute Damien Chazelle’s Babylon in theaters, starring Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt. The movie will stream shortly afterwards on Paramount+.

And speaking of Paramount movies coming to Paramount+, the studio has also announced the platform will become the exclusive home of all Paramount movies starting in 2024. Also, starting in 2022 internationally and in 2025 in the U.S., Paramount+ will be the exclusive home for all South Park-related content, including the full series, movies, and made-for-streaming movies. On top of that, the Beavis and Butt-Head reboot that was announced for Comedy Central almost two years ago is now heading to Paramount+ as well.

And finally, in corporate-oriented news, the company has also announced that ViacomCBS will be rebranded as Paramount, a move that makes sense for their international expansion plans.

There’s plenty more small and medium-sized news related to other recognizable Paramount franchises, so we recommend taking a look at their complete Twitter thread if you want to get the full picture of what the future holds for the company.
