Danny McBride, Gemma Chan, Benedict Wong Join Gareth Edwards’ ‘True Love’
New Regency’s upcoming sci-fi feature True Love is growing and adding some impressive names to its cast.
We have wondered about Gareth Edwards’ future in Hollywood for too long after the troubled post-production Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) went through. While negative buzz surrounding the director was pretty much non-existent and the film proved to be a success, many wondered if the rookie filmmaker (his only previous Hollywood gig was Godzilla) had been engulfed by the pressure that Hollywood studios often put on many newcomers’ shoulders. It now seems like he was just taking a rest and carefully setting up his next project: True Love, an original sci-fi story which he has also written.
John David Washington, who is one of the biggest rising talents in Hollywood right now, was the first reported actor to jump on the project, and now the Edwards-directed production is adding Danny McBride (Alien: Covenant), Gemma Chan (Eternals), and Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange). This a strong start for a film which we know nothing about besides its title and the promise that it’s set in the near future.
Edwards has been developing several projects in the past few years, wanting to make sure his next film was the right one before fully committing. He finally moved forward with True Love last year, and once the package hit the market, New Regency jumped at the opportunity to work with him. Kiri Hart, who used to play a key role in Lucasfilm’s Star Wars Story Group and is currently working with Rian Johnson, will serve as a producer on the project alongside Edwards himself.
