‘Morbius’ Delayed, ‘No Time to Die’ Delay Coming as Well, and Maybe Many More

Morbius

Morbius has just been delayed, and apparently, this one will be the first of many big movies being bumped in the coming weeks.

Sony Pictures announced yesterday that the upcoming superhero tentpole Morbius will now be released on October 8, 2021, which represents a seven-month delay from its last date announced. This movie was supposed to be released last July before COVID-19 turned the world upside down.

And that is not it, because several reports are hitting these days saying the big studios in town are considering delaying their blockbusters for the first half of the year. News on this matter could be coming out over the next couple of weeks.

The sure bet right now seems to be the new James Bond movie, No Time to Die, which could be moved into the fall again, according to Deadline. The list doesn’t stop there, as next month, a new Cinderella movie, directed by Kay Cannon and starring Camila Cabello in the title role is supposed to come out. That doesn’t sound familiar, right? Don’t worry, it’s not your fault. The studio hasn’t promoted it in the slightest. In fact, I remember hearing about this movie being in development a couple of years ago, but I didn’t even know they had started shooting it, let alone that it’s supposed to come out in less than a month (February 5, they are saying).

That one is moving, yes. But what next? Disney has The King’s Man slated for a March 12 release date, and I think it’s safe to assume that is moving as well. Another possibility, though, is a PVOD route. By that time, Disney Plus will have added a new section internationally, called Star, which is where the adult content will be dropped in the future; an overseas version of Hulu, only in this case it will be fully integrated into the Disney Plus site/app. I wouldn’t be shocked if, in the next few weeks, we hear that Matthew Vaughn’s new movie is coming to Hulu in the U.S. and to Star internationally.

This would help Disney promote their new feature, while at the same time they would be getting rid of a movie that has been causing them headaches ever since they acquired 21st Century Fox, almost two years ago. Remember that, originally, The King’s Man was going to be released in the late summer of 2019.

After that, the story gets even more complicated because the next big movie on the calendar is Marvel Studios’ Black Widow. Last month, Kevin Feige addressed this matter and did confirm the movie would have a theatrical release. However, things can always change, and that’s what he admitted in a recent interview, where he said that everything is unclear right now, even though the plan is still to premiere the movie in theaters.

In a recent report, Variety revealed that their Disney insiders are still saying that the movie will debut theatrically. However, we must remember that this is the same situation we were in a few months ago, before Soul was announced to be moving to Disney Plus. While there was a lot of speculation on the street, Disney guaranteed, publicly and privately, that the movie was coming to theaters on Thanksgiving. And a few weeks later, they announced that was no longer the case.

At this point, we can just sit back and cross our fingers that the vaccination process speeds up and that we achieve mass immunization as soon as possible. Make sure to come back for more news on this topic in the next few weeks. Hopefully, Morbius will be the first of a very short list of delays.
