‘The New Mutants’ Is Coming to Comic-Con at Home

The cast and the director of what is now Disney’s The New Mutants will be attending a virtual panel at Comic-Con@Home.

To promote the panel the studio released a very short teaser for the film. If you are not familiar with the infamous story behind this project, here’s a quick catch up – the project was filmed in 2017 aiming for an April 2018 release by what was then 20th Century Fox. The project got delayed several times, then Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, gave it a new release date for April 2020, then the pandemic came, they removed it from their release schedule, and finally, a couple of months ago, they announced a new release date for August 28, 2020.

Now, apparently the studio is not mentioning the release date in this new teaser and neither are their social media posts (minus the YouTube description of the video). The panel at Comic-Con@Home will take place next week, Thursday, July 23, at 2 pm PT. It will be hosted by Ira Madison III and will have Josh Boone, the director of the project, as well as the main cast, discussing the film on a virtual panel.

This is not the first time something like this happens since the coronavirus affected so many release dates in the past few months. Back in May, WB released a brand new trailer for Tenet, and the July 17, 2020 release date (today, ironically) they were planning at the time was nowhere to be found on their social media posts, or the trailer. Obviously, that got bumped, and I believe we are just sitting here waiting for the next release date to be announced (even Variety has backed this hunch of mine).

I strongly believe The New Mutants will not debut in theaters on August 28, 2020. In fact, I have a feeling they are going to release it on Disney+, maybe in August, maybe some other time, but I don’t think they will keep delaying it, not only because they have done that so many times already, but also because 2021 is becoming extremely packed with all of these movies getting delayed, and I believe it will get even busier in the upcoming months when studios start delaying even more movies.

I have to say, the fact that they are hosting this panel could be going against my theory, since if they were to announce that the movie is being delayed again, why would they do a virtual panel to promote the movie? I have a couple of thoughts regarding this. On the one hand, it is possible that they are still not sure whether to delay it or not, and they are just trying to act like nothing is going on.

On the other hand, they could be planning to announce on the panel that the movie will be coming to Disney+ instead of a theatrical release, and if they are going to do that, maybe they could even say it’ll be coming out before that. I also believe we are getting a final trailer for this movie.

Whatever the case may be, we will find out next Thursday at 2 pm, and we will keep you informed here at Movie News Net.
