First Poster Arrives for ‘Joker’ – Teaser Tomorrow

Joker
Are you ready to put on a happy face? The first poster for Todd Phillips’ Joker is here with the director promising a teaser trailer tomorrow.

Taking to Instagram, Philips shared the poster with the simple message “Teaser trailer tomorrow.” The poster itself is simple but effective, featuring a close up of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker looking up against a black smoky background. It’s an image that brings to mind a clown, stood in the center ring, having just removed his hat and raised it to the sky, poised to take a dramatic bow.

Phoenix’s Joker make up looks different here. Less smeared than we saw in the test footage Philips released last year, with a black outline to his red lips, and he doesn’t look to be wearing the classic Joker costume he was seen in during filming, suggesting that we may be looking at Arthur Fleck before his descent into madness. He’s also lacking the green hair dye.

Unlike the colorful posters of Shazam! and AquamanJoker‘s teaser poster is decidedly darker with deep blacks and a more muted color palette. It’s a fitting choice for a film that is said to be a crime drama and character study rather than a comic book blockbuster, reflecting DC Films’ new approach of letting the character dictate the tone rather than one-size-fits-all. It’s also a neat way of visually distinguishing the film from the other movies; while Shazam! and Aquaman are both set in the same continuity, Joker is in a completely standalone universe with no plans to start a franchise.

The story of Arthur Fleck is described as “[an] exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” We’ll get our first look at his story tomorrow.

Joker is due to hit theaters October 4, 2019.
