Craig Gillespie In Talks To Direct ‘Supergirl’ For DC

Supergirl

Craig Gillespie, the director behind I, Tonya and Cruella, as well as the Emmy-nominated Hulu series Pam & Tommy, is currently in negotiations to direct DC Studios’ Supergirl, Deadline reported today.

The title character will first be introduced in James Gunn’s Superman, due out July 11, 2025, and will be played by House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock. But the studio will be looking into riding that momentum and trying to get the movie into production before the end of the year, the outlet reported.

Ana Nogueira is currently writing the script, and bringing a director along is definitely an encouraging sign that the studio wants to move fast with this one — though not enough on its own, as even though they locked in directors for both The Brave and the Bold and Swamp Thing last year, there is very little movement on those fronts for now, as Andy Muschietti and James Mangold are tied up elsewhere.

Gillespie is coming in with a box office disappointment, even if a fun movie to watch, in last fall’s Dumb Money. An interesting detail about these reports is that the title may have quietly been changed. The project was originally announced as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. But much like Superman: Legacy lost its subtitle, it looks like Kara Zor-El has followed suit.

No release date has been announced for Supergirl. DC Studios seems to be moving in interesting directions with their feature slate, as they may have fast-tracked this one and pushed back on The Authority and The Brave and the Bold for various reasons. Or at least that’s what it looks like from the very narrow perspective we have from here. But their slate of live-action Max series is kind of a head-scratcher at this point.

They announced multiple projects in January last year, from Booster Gold to the Wonder Woman tie-in Paradise Lost, and the only one we’ve seen some movement reported on is Green Lanterns, which apparently enlisted Damon Lindelof as a consultant and is a priority for the streamer. Gunn has said on social media that Peacemaker season 2 will be shooting this year, but what is happening with Waller? I guess Gunn said that they are currently writing it but it will come out after Peacemaker S2. Ok…
