‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ Taps Ana Nogueira To Pen Script

Supergirl

DC Studios continues its development on the slate they’d announced in late January, and one of the films just got a major upgrade. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that actress and playwright, who is now venturing into screenwriting, will be scripting the upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Nogueira’s deal seems to be quite recent, probably closed after the WGA strike was over. But here’s the interesting part. The pre-DC Studios regime at Warner Bros. was once planning to spin off Sasha Calle’s version of Supergirl into her own feature film. Those plans, much like most of the rest of the previous DC slate, were scrapped. Ana Nogueira was apparently going to write the film, and though she never got a chance to, James Gunn and Peter Safran brought her back.

In context, this development is a lot more interesting. Obviously, Gunn and Safran are trying to distance themselves from the previous DC slate and cast. None of the Justice League members are expected to return, despite what Gal Gadot may have been told, but that isn’t stopping Gunn from recasting Jason Momoa as Lobo.

John Cena and Viola Davis are also transitioning into the DCU, and James Gunn is not the only director moving on from the previous regime, as Andy Muschietti is also directing The Brave and the Bold. Nogueira’s case is a bit different, obviously, but is still in that line: Gunn likes to keep those relationships and doesn’t like to say “No”, which could splash in his face at some point. Will Sasha Calle return? There’s certainly room for that.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow doesn’t have a director or a release date. We know five feature films are in the works at DC Studios. First up, James Gunn’s written-and-directed Superman: Legacy flies into theaters on July 11, 2025. According to Deadline, it’s expected to start filming in March, with David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. (No actor has been announced for Lex Luthor yet, but keep an eye on that now that the strike is over.)

The Authority doesn’t have a director or a writer yet, but there are plenty of rumors of Matthew Vaughn having been offered the director’s chair. Vaughn did confirm Gunn and Safran reached out and added “Never say never” on The Authority.

As previously mentioned, the Muschiettis are working on The Brave and the Bold, with Andy directing and Barbara producing. Christina Hodson was once attached to write, but moved on to Universal’s Fast and Furious franchise. The latest, hot Internet rumor was Gladiator scribe John Logan, though that seems more like a pipe dream. That project is also in the distant future, as the Muschiettis are currently working on Max’s Welcome to Derry prequel series.

Besides Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, we also have James Mangold doing Swamp Thing, though that seems to be even more far off. Mangold is doing a Bob Dylan biopic next, starring Timothée Chalamet and Benedict Cumberbatch, and later he’ll move on to do a Star Wars movie.
