‘Kinds of Kindness’: New Yorgos Lanthimos Movie Coming June 21

Kinds of Kindness

Searchlight Pictures has announced that the next film from director Yorgos Lanthimos, Kinds of Kindness, is coming out a bit sooner than expected. The anthology film will be released on June 21, possibly following a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

The pic marks a reunion between Lanthimos and most of his Poor Things cast, including Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Margaret Qualley. Jesse Plemons and Hong Chau are also part of the ensemble, along with Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer.

This is Lanthimos’ follow-up to the four-time Oscar winner Poor Things, which earned Emma Stone her second Best Actress statue. Actress and director are set to team up for more projects after Kinds of Kindness, including the Save the Green Planet remake that is set to start filming in June. (Stone is currently shooting Ari Aster’s Eddington.) They have also shot a top-secret project in Greece of which we know very little.

The release date is certainly a bit surprising, since it was expected to premiere during the fall, similar to Poor Things, and benefit from a festival push into awards season. Blind predictions for next year’s Oscars put it as Searchlight’s big contender. A Cannes premiere is to be expected, according to World of Reel, and the move is reminiscent of last year’s Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City.

The pic consists of three shorter stories put together in anthology style, with the actors playing a role in each part. Lanthimos explained it as follows to The Guardian a few months ago:

“It’s all shot and we have started editing. It’s a contemporary film, set in the US – three different stories, with four or five actors who play one part in each story, so they all play three different parts. It was almost like making three films, really. But it’s great to be working again with Emma. It makes it so much easier to have someone there who trusts you so much, and who you trust so much.”
