‘The Batman’ Sequel Delayed To October 2026

The Batman

Warner Bros. has delayed Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II an entire year. The film, originally scheduled for October 2025, will now bow in theaters on October 2, 2026, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Secrecy around the film has been generating a lot of concern about it. It’s now been two years since the first movie came out, and the sequel was announced by Warner Bros. just a couple of months later at CinemaCon. Even taking the five-month writers’ strike into account, the sequel should have locked down a script by now (Reeves is returning to write, with Mattson Tomlin co-writing it).

The reason for the delay has not been disclosed, but Reeves also took his time with the script for the first movie, which itself suffered a number of release date changes due to COVID-19. However, with the main cast now in place and Reeves probably having conceptualized an idea for the sequel well in advance, it looked like they might start earlier on this one. That is not the case, it seems. Earlier reports had hinted at an August production start, but that will probably not hold.

Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but Barry Keoghan did hint recently at his involvement as Joker in The Batman Part II. He told ETalk:

“I can’t really say anything about that. It would be exciting, wouldn’t it? To see the Joker come to life again. My smile says all, you know what I mean?”

Details around this delay will probably surface over the next few days, but it’s not looking likely for a 2024 shoot.

The Batman Part II is completely disconnected from James Gunn’s nascent DCU, and in fact, will be produced by Warner Bros. proper, under the guidance of Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, and not DC Studios and James Gunn. Is the delay perhaps motivated by not confusing audiences, since 2025 will be the introduction of a brand-new Superman, played by David Corenswet? Perhaps. Gunn’s continuity is set to have its own Batman, which will receive the spotlight in the upcoming The Brave and the Bold, from director Andy Muschietti. The status of that project remains unknown, with no release date announced.
