Francis Ford Coppola Confirms ‘Megalopolis’ Will Be Out Soon, Adds “It’s Unusual and Never Boring”

Megalopolis

Francis Ford Coppola recently stepped by the Accutron podcast, and the topic of his upcoming epic Megalopolis came up. Via IndieWire, the Godfather filmmaker said the following about his new film:

“It’s only going to be a few months and it’ll be out. All I can say is I love the actors in it. It’s unusual, and it’s never boring. Other than that, wait and see.”

The film has long been rumored for a Cannes debut. Coppola financed the $120M budget himself, and so far, no distributor has been attached. Perhaps a Cannes sale is in place, but with the director saying self-assuredly that it’s only a few months away, perhaps he knows something we don’t. Here is the official synopsis for the film:

“The fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems in this epic story of political ambition, genius, and dangerous love.”

Adam Driver and Aubrey Plaza play the leads. Last year, while in production, there were some behind-the-scenes movements that painted a bad PR rap for the film, when Coppola fired the entire VFX department due to creative differences, which got a lot of backlash on social media, since Coppola is implementing state-of-the-art technology to make this movie, and he’s not nearly familiar with the process.

Driver came out to aid his director, and defended him and the entire project:

“Because he financed it himself, it made the shooting process one of the best experiences, if not the best shooting experience, I’ve ever had. There was no excess conversation, there were no people robbing from Peter to pay Paul. It felt like he was in control of the movie that he wanted to make and that was it. It felt like, ‘Oh, this is how movies should be.’ And he is the most generous, philosophical person that I know. I loved that process and making it with him. I love talking to him.”
