Gareth Edwards To Direct New ‘Jurassic World’ Movie

Universal has found their top choice to direct their new Jurassic World installment, as Gareth Edwards is reportedly in talks to step in and deliver the film on the tight deadline of July 2, 2025.

This is according to The Hollywood Reporter, and the news comes out just a couple of weeks after news broke that the once-in-talks David Leitch split amicably with the studio (reportedly after his producing partner fired the line producer, a longtime collaborator of Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall’s).

The job description is more in line with someone who can deliver the project under strict studio mandates than one willing to take the time to get his creative juices flowing. This is because the studio is keen on making that July 2025 release date, but it seems to be a bit contradictory with the fact that they went back to David Koepp to write the script (the writer of the original Jurassic Park). Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall are supposed to be rather involved with the search, and they apparently had their ideal picks in mind, but they are thought to be more in line with auteur directors than “shooters”.

Story details remain under wraps, but the package has been described as a relaunch of the IP, which seeks to move on from previous acting ensembles. Should Edwards’ deal close, the studio will likely start meeting with talent agencies.

Edwards is coming off the critically successful, yet box office disappointment The Creator, his first directorial effort since 2016’s Rogue One. He has quite a bit of experience with big monster/sci-fi movies and delivering projects under strict studio deadlines.

The Jurassic World movies averaged a billion dollars at the global box office, and though Universal was thought to be putting the franchise on the ground for a while, the success of Dominion (which was critically panned) forced them to keep it alive. It is one of two major dinosaur films being set up in Hollywood right now, with David Robert Mitchell’s untitled film at Warner Bros. set fo begin filming in March with Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor.
