Coppola’s ‘The Conversation’ Getting Series Remake From JC Chandor
IndieWire confirmed last week that JC Chandor is attached to direct a series remake of the 1974 film The Conversation, by Francis Ford Coppola.
Rumors had been swirling for a few days from Daniel Richtman, which the outlet later confirmed. However, despite what Richtman had said, Aubrey Plaza may not be starring in it, as IndieWire was told no acting talent is attached yet. (It should be noted that Richtman had said Plaza had the offer, not that she’d signed on, so technically both could still be correct.)
MRC is overseeing the series, which has enlisted Erin Levy (Mad Men, Mindhunter) as showrunner. Apparently, it’s going to take it to market with hopes that it will become a running series, not a limited one. Per the trade, here’s the official logline:
Based on Francis Ford Coppola’s seminal 1974 film, “The Conversation” follows luddite Harry Caul, a surveillance specialist obsessed with privacy, as she becomes entangled in a corporate espionage mystery that is bigger than she ever imagined. As she gets deeper, the surveillant becomes the surveilled, and she’ll have to step outside of her reclusive life and make the personal connections she’s been avoiding to find answers, and save herself.
The original film was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Picture. It also won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Gene Hackman starred as Harry Caul — the character will be gender-swapped on the TV series. It’s one of the most influential films of the latter half of the 20th century; Steven Soderbergh even had a crack at a similar story a couple of years ago with the Zoë Kravitz-starrer Kimi that debuted on Max.
Chandor is currently in post-production of Sony/Marvel’s Kraven the Hunter. He’s directed Margin Call, the 2011 film about the 2008 financial collapse, and All Is Lost. Coppola, who is attached as a producer to the series, has a new movie coming out this year: the long-in-development Megalopolis, with Adam Driver and Aubrey Plaza starring.

However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as authors like Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
