Amy Adams In Talks to Join Taika Waititi’s ‘Klara and the Sun’

Six-time Academy Award nominee Amy Adams is in negotiations to star in Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun for 3000 Pictures, Deadline is reporting. She would be the second actress to board the project after Jenna Ortega.

According to the trade, the project, which was in development before the strikes, was made a priority for the studio in the fall, once the labor disputes were settled. Klara and the Sun is an adaptation of the March 2021 novel of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro, who executive produces the movie along with Heyday Films’ David Heyman, Garrett Basch, and Waititi.

While Deadline made no mention of it, Dahvi Waller was once reported to be writing the project — though Waititi will surely want to make some revisions. Here is the synopsis for the book from Goodreads:

“From her place in the store, Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her, but when the possibility emerges that her circumstances may change forever, Klara is warned not to invest too much in the promises of humans.”

In the story, Klara is eventually acquired by a mother and her daughter Josie, who suffers from a mysterious illness. Klara’s companionship will alleviate her suffering for her, while the robot struggles with fundamental questions about what it means to love.

Adams would be playing the mother, while Ortega is playing Klara. Production is set to begin within a few weeks, Deadline said, should the deal be closed.

Amy Adams also recently signed up for a new limited series titled The Holdout, which has multiple bidders interested. We assume she would begin filming that after Klara and the Sun. She also stars in Marielle Heller’s Nightbitch, which Searchlight will be distributing later this year.
