Damien Chazelle Wrote a Musical That Matthew Vaughn Will Direct

Matthew Vaughn, the director behind the Kingsman movies and the upcoming Argylle, will be directing a new musical written by La La Land auteur Damien Chazelle. Vaughn confirmed as much to Deadline in a recent interview.

The untitled project seems to be in development, with the trade saying he simply “plans to direct it”. But a script probably exists somewhere. It joins a long list of projects Vaughn will get around to at some point. He’s been shooting a hush-hush movie in the UK for 11 weeks referred to as Project X and has several prequels and sequels to Argylle and Kingsman in the works, not to mention a Kick-Ass reboot. So who knows when he’ll actually get around to it.

This is the first time we’re hearing about Damien Chazelle’s work since the release of Babylon last year (a movie that will inevitably crawl back into pop culture in a few years as a hidden gem, I believe). Right around the release of the Margot Robbie-led film, he’d signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures to produce and direct films for them. More than a year later, we still don’t know if there’s any movement on that, but we could learn more about it in the coming months.

Regardless, it’s unknown if the deal involves movies he’s written, but it probably doesn’t. Vaughn has previously partnered up with 20th Century for the Kingsman movies, Lionsgate for Kick-Ass, and with Apple/Universal for Argylle. It’s unknown who’s backing Project X, but could he make the move to Paramount next?

It’s certainly strange, though, that Damien Chazelle would write a musical for someone else. He has a co-writer credit on 10 Cloverfield Lane and wrote 2013’s Grand Piano for Eugenio Mira. According to IMDb, there’s also the movie The Claim that is in pre-production that he wrote for Ericson Core to direct. But musicals are kind of Chazelle’s thing, so why would he give it up for someone like Matthew Vaughn, whose sensibilities couldn’t be more different? Is he, perhaps, planning to direct something even bigger? Whatever idea he has, I’ll be right here waiting impatiently to see it.

Argylle opens in theaters on Feb. 2.
