‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Sets Directing Lineup, With Mark Mylod, Kate Herron, Craig Mazin, Neil Druckmann, and More

HBO has confirmed the directing lineup of The Last of Us season 2, including three returning directors from the first season, and a murderers row of TV veterans.

Per Variety, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann return to direct episodes of season 2, which is set to begin production on Feb. 12. They are joined by Peter Hoar, who directed the third episode of season 3, the bottle episode “Long, Long Time” (also known as one of the best episodes of TV ever; source: me).

Here are the four new additions: Loki‘s Kate Herron (who’d already been scooped by TheInSneider.com a few weeks ago), Succession‘s Mark Mylod, Watchmen‘s Stephen Williams, and Perry Mason‘s Nina Lopez-Corrado.

Mylod is an HBO Hall-of-Famer, having directed six episodes of Game of Thrones and the majority of Succession, including the last two episodes of every season — he just won an Emmy for directing the season 3 episode “Connor’s Wedding” (along with the Best Drama Series award as a producer.) He also directed 2022’s The Menu, which found a second life on HBO Max.

As Variety explains, landing any of these four people would have been a giant win for the show, but getting all of them is a giant boost of confidence and also excitement. The number of episodes for season 2 remains under wraps, but at least we now know it will be seven or more. Mazin and Druckmann have gone on record multiple times to say that they will be adapting the second game with the new season, but that the story of that game doesn’t fit into a single season of TV — though they wouldn’t give any additional details, including at which point of the story they will be cutting or how many seasons it will span.

We can certainly make educated guesses on both accounts, but it’s not official until it’s official. And for now, that entails the main cast of the new season, which includes: Bella Ramsey returning as Ellie and Pedro Pascal returning as Joel, with newcomers Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, and Kaitlyn Dever as Abby. While not confirmed yet, Gabriel Luna is expected to return as Joel’s brother, Tommy.

The Last of Us season 2 is expected to hit HBO in 2025.
