‘3 Body Problem’ Debuts New Trailer, Series Coming to Netflix on March 21

Three Body Problem

Netflix premiered today a brand-new trailer for their upcoming event series 3 Body Problem, from Game of Thrones directors David Benioff and DB Weiss.

The eight-episode series is coming to Netflix on March 21 (it was originally slated for January). Benioff and Weiss co-created it with Alexander Woo, based on the series of novels The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu. The impressive list of executive producers include Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman, former and current CEOs of the rights-holder The Three-Body Universe; Brad Pitt via Plan B, and Rosamund Pike via Primitive Streak, among many others.

Check out the trailer here:

The cast includes Jess Hong as Jin Cheng, Eiza González as Auggie Salazar, Jovan Adepo as Saul Durand, Alex Sharp as Will Downing, John Bradley as Jack Rooney, Benedict Wong as intelligence officer Da Shi, Saamer Usmani as Raj Varma, Liam Cunningham as Thomas Wade, Rosalind Chao and Zine Tseng as Ye Wenjie, Jonathan Pryce and Ben Schnetzer as Mike Evans, Marlo Kelly as Tatiana, Sea Shimooka as Sophon, and Eve Ridley as Follower.

Here is the official logline for the series:

A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.

Not only is this one of Netflix’s biggest series of the year, it’s one of their biggest bets ever. Getting first dibs on the creators of Game of Thrones after they parted ways with Lucasfilm must not have been easy or cheap, which is why they probably let them run free creatively. And yet, two months before it’s due out, it feels like there’s no buzz around this one. Even I had forgotten about it, despite being actually excited about it.

Of course, streaming marketing windows are pretty compressed, and the platform still has a lot of time to put some real promotion behind it. But everything on Netflix lives and dies based on word of mouth and whatever the social media algorithms highlight. Shows like Squid Game or The Night Agent come out of nowhere and become the biggest thing on TV. But how does stuff they try to control like One Piece or The Witcher do on the platform? We’ll have a better idea once they disclose their numbers for the second half of 2023.

For now, 3 Body Problem is coming to Netflix on March 31. Another big series for them, The Last Airbender, is due out in February.
