HBO Confirms Kaitlyn Dever as Abby in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2

The Last of Us: Kaitlyn Dever will play Abby

After the name was first reported late last year, HBO has announced that Kaitlyn Dever will be playing Abby in the new season of The Last of Us, set to begin filming on February 12.

In a statement to the trades (via Deadline), co-showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann said:

“Our casting process for season two has been identical to season one: we look for world-class actors who embody the souls of the characters in the source material. Nothing matters more than talent, and we’re thrilled to have an acclaimed performer like Kaitlyn join Pedro, Bella and the rest of our family.”

Dever is now the first official addition to the season 2 cast. Mazin had teased last year this was the first role they were going to focus on, but Deadline is saying two other big ones are vacant for now. While they didn’t go into details, given how the story of the game plays out, it seems like those would be Dina and Jesse.

Abby plays a pivotal role in The Last of Us Part II, but the story of that game will span more than one season, Mazin has repeatedly said. So how will they adapt it? If they follow the same structure of the game, Abby doesn’t appear in more than a handful of scenes until the second half of the story. Would that second half be part of season 3? If so, how big will Dever’s role in season 2 be, then? Could they actually film both seasons back to back?

A lot of questions, very few answers. Season 2 will set up shop in Vancouver, given most of the story of the second game will take place in the Pacific Northwest. Pedro Pascal is supposed to shoot Zach Cregeer’s Weapons from Feb. 20 – April 18. While that is an ensemble movie, it’s safe to assume Pascal, who will be returning in a smaller role as Joel in season 2, will not be around for the first few weeks of the production. Maybe they’ll be shooting the Seattle part of the story first, then.

Whatever it may be, The Last of Us season 2 is supposed to air on HBO and Max in 2025. Stay tuned for more!
