Gal Gadot Says She Has Had Conversations About Developing ‘Wonder Woman 3’ With James Gunn and Peter Safran

Late last year we learned that James Gunn and Peter Safran would be rebooting the DC franchise, a move they announced by announcing that Henry Cavill was not Superman anymore, and that Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3, with Gal Gadot set to star, was no longer in the works at the studio. At the time, with four more movies from the previous regime still to come out, they couldn’t really say that they would be moving on entirely from Zack Snyder’s Justice League lineup, but the writing was on the wall.

Despite that, some of the announcements Gunn and Safran have made over the past few months have been slightly contradictory with that assessment. Going no further, the first live-action series they will be working on under the newly-branded DCU is Waller, starring Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. They have also insisted that Peacemaker will be returning for a second season, and that Xolo Maridueña has a future under their continuity as Blue Beetle (from what we know about the film, this doesn’t present any continuity issues, as the film seems to be isolated from the rest of the DCEU, even if it was greenlit at a time where that was the main brand).

Despite that, recasting the roles of Superman and Lois Lane, and planning to do so with a new (and possibly younger) Batman, seemed to suggest that at least the core characters would be rebooted. Well, not so fast. Gal Gadot revealed in a new interview with ComicBook.com where she was promoting her new Netflix film Heart of Stone that she’s had conversations with James Gunn and Peter Safran about developing a new Wonder Woman film:

“I love portraying Wonder Woman. It’s so close to and dear to my heart. From what I heard from James and from Peter is that we’re gonna develop a Wonder Woman 3 together.”

While this may sound a bit surprising at first, the question of whether Gadot would be coming back as Wonder Woman in the DCU has been one that Gunn and Safran have been dodging for months. In the slate of Chapter 1 projects they announced in late January, the duo revealed a Paradise Lost live-action series coming to Max, set in Themiscyra and focused on the Amazonians. However, they never confirmed whether Wonder Woman would be involved or not.

Moreover, Gunn and Safran have been quite insistent on retooling the slate of 2023 movies and removing cameos from Henry Cavill in The Flash and Ben Affleck/Michael Keaton in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom because they thought that would promise a future they were not going to explore further. The same goes for Michael Keaton and Sasha Calle at the end of The Flash. Despite that, they kept Gal Gadot’s cameos in both Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash (it’s true that Affleck’s scenes in the latter were also kept, but that would have been a bigger mess because he was not just a cameo).

Despite all of that, Gadot’s possible inclusion in the DCU adds even more weight to the continuity question that Gunn and Safran are facing when going into Superman: Legacy and beyond. Is this a rebooted timeline where some characters were kept and others weren’t, or a new reality altogether? Does that even matter? Probably not, but the truth is that Viola Davis, Gal Gadot, and however many other characters Gunn and Safran incorporate from the old DCEU (Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn remains an open question) will surely bring some PTSD to some fans while also raising so many questions for casual viewers who want to go see Superman: Legacy because it’s fresh and new.

These are concerns that the duo probably have raised in their private conversations, so before we see anything they have in store, we should be patient and trust that they have a vision that will be beneficial for their story in the long run. As of today, should the strikes be resolved sooner rather than later as reports seem to suggest, Superman: Legacy would be able to continue with pre-production and be ready to shoot by January 2024 as planned. The movie comes out on July 11, 2025.
