Kevin Costner Sets Summer 2024 Dates for Two ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ Movies, First Look Revealed

Kevin Costner is back in the director’s chair for his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga, which he also stars in, produces, and finances. It will be released in two chapters via New Line, with Chapter 1 hitting theaters on June 28, 2024, and Chapter 2 on August 16, 2024.

A small teaser with the whole cast was also posted today:

The project has been a lot in the news lately, as it’s been the source of fighting between Costner and Paramount Network over his time devoted to filming Yellowstone. Costner started showing up less on the set of the Taylor Sheridan series as his focus shifted towards his longtime passion project, this multiple-film arc titled Horizon which he’s not only been developing for a long time, but also felt so adamant about he opted to put in the money himself (a move that echoes Francis Ford Coppola also financing Megalopolis almost on his own).

But the number of movies has also been a bit of a question mark. The original report by Deadline said it’d be a trilogy, and then Costner himself said it was actually going to be a four-film arc: “They’re all different films that all connect, so you’re watching a saga of these storylines that are happening.” The story is set to span 15 years before and after the American Civil War expansion and the settlement of the American West; per Deadline:

“In the great tradition of classic Westerns, the second film will continue to explore the lure of the old West and will take audiences on a treacherous journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.”

From the promos released today, it seems like Costner eventually brought it down to two movies, though it’s unknown if there will be Chapters 3 and 4 planned for the future, should the first two meet the established box office thresholds. He’d also told Variety that they’d come out every three months, which seems to be true for the first two films, but will probably not hold for the other two — production started on Chapter 2 three months before the strike.

The cast of Horizon: An American Saga includes Kevin Costner (who also directs both films), Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, and Jamie Campbell Bower.
