Lionsgate and STX Developing ‘Hustlers’ and ‘Bad Moms’ TV Series as Part of New Distribution Deal That Includes Daisy Ridley’s ‘The Marsh King’s Daughter’

Lionsgate and STX to partner on Bad Moms TV series

Lionsgate announced earlier this week that they will be partnering with STX to produce live-action TV series based on the 2016 hit comedy Bad Moms, and the 2019 Jennifer Lopez-starrer Hustlers.

The report comes from IndieWire, which frames both projects as part of a larger distribution deal between both companies. As a result, Lionsgate will not only handle the domestic distribution of future STXfilms titles, but also handle marketing and distribution for 75 library titles from the production company, including Bad Moms and its 2017 sequel, A Bad Moms Christmas. There hasn’t been any movement yet on the new TV series, and no word on if any of the cast members or creatives behind either project would return.

Lionsgate had explored an acquisition of STX and its library in the past, but nothing came of it. The company was then acquired by private equity firm The Najafi Companies, an investment company run by Jahm Najafi. Since then, STX has produced Run Rabbit Run, which sold to Netflix during the Sundance Film Festival (and which premiered to an abysmal 37% critic score and 23% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes), as well as Guy Ritchie’s last two movies, The Covenant and Operation Fortune: Ruse du Guerre.

No word yet on who is behind his upcoming film, which was given a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement that would allow it to continue casting, though actors will not be permitted to rehearse or film anything until the strike is over. Black Bear International started the sale at the Canes Film Festival earlier this year with Henry Cavill, Eiza González, and Jake Gyllenhaal attached as leads.

The first film to fall under this new deal will be The Marsh King’s Daughter, which stars Daisy Ridley and which revealed its first trailer on Wednesday. Neil Burger (Limitless, Billions) directs from a script by Elle Smith and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant), based on Karen Dionne’s novel.

The Marsh King’s Daughter releases in theaters on October 6, a date that has landed several major projects, including Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Sundance darling Cat Person.
