‘Napoleon’ Trailer Reveals Joaquin Phoenix Ascend as France’s Emperor

Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon in the new trailer

Sony Pictures and Apple Original Films have finally revealed the epic trailer for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, which sees Joaquin Phoenix take on the role of the infamous French Emperor.

This is no ordinary origin story. Scott went all for broke on the movie, and it shows, with every frame being as large as it can be and cramming in armies as large as they can be. Mission: Impossible may be the film to see in theaters this summer, but Napoleon will certainly give Tom Cruise a run for his money this fall. Check out the Napoleon trailer for yourself here:

This is the official synopsis for the film:

“Napoleon” is an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. The film captures Napoleon’s famous battles, relentless ambition and astounding strategic mind as an extraordinary military leader and war visionary.

The cast includes Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte, Vanessa Kirby as Empress Josephine, Tahar Rahim as Paul Barras, Ben Miles as Caulaincourt, Ludivine Sagnier as Theresa Cabarrus, Matthew Needham as Lucien Bonaparte, Youssef Kerkour as Marshal Davout, Phil Cornwell as Sanson ‘The Bourreau,’ Edouard Philipponnat as Tsar Alexander, Paul Rhys as Talleyrand, John Hollingworth as Marshall Ney, Gavin Spokes as Moulins and Mark Bonnar as Jean-Andoche Junot.

Once titled Kitbag and with Jodie Comer attached to play Josephine, the film marks the reunion between Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix after their stellar work on Gladiator. Scott also reunites with his All the Money in the World scribe David Scarpa, who penned Napoleon by himself. The film is set to be a major contender in the upcoming Oscar season and could give both Phoenix and Scott new nominations as Best Actor and Best Director, respectively.

Napoleon will be released in theaters worldwide on November 22 before it moves on to stream exclusively on Apple TV Plus, in a similar strategy to Killers of the Flower Moon, which Paramount distributes.
