New ‘Alien’ Movie From Fede Álvarez Wraps Production

Director Fede Álvarez announced on social media earlier this week that he’s called a wrap on his upcoming Alien movie for 20th Century Studios. Filming began on March 9.

The project stars Cailee Spaeny, who is set to play a role akin to Sigourney Weaver’s in 1979’s Alien, along with Spike Fearn, David Jonsson, Archie Reneaux, Isabela Merced, and Aileen Wu. Spaeny, who is the lead in the film, may be known for roles in HBO’s Mare of Easttown or Bad Times at the El Royale, but she’s about to become a household name via Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, in which she will play the titular role of Priscilla Presley, and might even be a contender for the Best Actress Oscar, depending on the reception of the film.

Little is known about the plot of the film, but after being initially intended for a Hulu release, Disney recently dated it for August 16, 2024. The plot is being kept under wraps as of now, but we do have a generic plot synopsis revealed by the studio earlier this year:

“In this ninth entry in the immensely popular and enduring film series, a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

The film is still officially untitled, but rumors point to Alien: Romulus potentially being the name that will be eventually announced. This will be the first Alien movie released since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox back in 2019, and it will be disconnected from Prometheus and its sequel Alien: Covenant, which was the last xenomorph-centric movie we got, back in May 2017. This is part of Disney’s attempt to exploit the Fox library, which already started with last year’s critically-acclaimed Prey, which is likely to get nominated and even win the Emmy for Best TV Movie, and will continue with May 2024’s The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

An Alien TV series is also in the works for FX/Hulu, from showrunner Noah Hawley. It was announced 2.5 years ago, but it is expected that, after several delays, it might go into production later this year.
