Killers of the Flower Moon

(L-R) Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon, coming soon to Apple TV+.

Apple has revealed the official trailer for Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro.

The movie tells the story of the murders that took place in the Osage Country in the 1920s, after the Native Americans that were living in the region found oil and became the richest per capita people in the world. Interested parties from all over the country came in, and blood was spilled not too late after that. Check out the two-minute promo here:

Here is the official synopsis for the film:

At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight. The wealth of these Native Americans immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted, and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder. Based on a true story and told through the improbable romance of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), “Killers of the Flower Moon” is an epic western crime saga, where real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal.

Also starring Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, Brendan Fraser, Tantoo Cardinal, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, and Jillian Dion, Killers of the Flower Moon is directed by Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Eric Roth and Scorsese, based on David Grann’s best-selling book.

With it, it’s finally been confirmed that Brendan Fraser will be a part of the story, as initial reports had suggested. However, he was absent from the promotional materials so far. It seems that his role will be rather limited. Killers of the Flower Moon first premiered during the Cannes Film Festival, and it will have a theatrical release in the fall before it goes exclusively to Apple TV Plus.

The star of the film will be Lily Gladstone, who plays Mollie, the Native American lead of the film. The actress was getting strong Oscar buzz before the film premiered at Cannes, but it’s only grown stronger ever since. Gladstone spoke to Empire Magazine in their latest issue, calling Killers of the Flower Moon Scorsese’s “Great American Tragedy”, adding:

“A lot of people are really wanting to call this ‘Martin Scorsese’s Western.’ With natives and Westerns, we are so dehumanised that it just kind of feels like we’re part of the landscape – instead of humans that are telling a story.”

The soul of the movie will be Mollie’s relationship with Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio), which represents a shift from the book. Grann’s writing focused on the murder investigation by Tom White (Jesse Plemons). However, during the scripting of the film, Scorsese and DiCaprio realized the movie needed an emotional angle, which they found through Mollie and Ernest’s tragic love story. Gladstone talked to Empire about how this relationship felt true to her:

“Having grown up on my reservation in Montana, in the American West and Indian country, it was very familiar to see this goofy, exaggerated cowboy sort of a character falling for a really self-possessed native woman. That’s just such a familiar dynamic. And that was backed up by a lot of community stories that we had heard.”

It’s of course a tragic love story since it’s Ernest and his uncle, played by De Niro, who are behind the murders. But we’ll let Tom White find that out for himself.

Killers of the Flower Moon is set for limited release on October 6 and will expand wide on October 20.
