The first official trailer for Sony Pictures’ Dumb Money has been released, pulling the curtain on the highly-anticipated take on the GameStop market frenzy that took Reddit and Wall Street by storm in January of 2021.

The story follows a group of semi-organized Reddit users who started to buy GameStop stock, making its price skyrocket and forcing billionaires who had shorted against the company to lose billions in the process, while users who purchased stock when it was down ended up making millions off it. Here is the official synopsis for the film:

“‘Dumb Money’ is the ultimate David vs. Goliath tale, based on the insane true story of everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop (yes, the mall videogame store) into the world’s hottest company. In the middle of everything is regular guy Keith Gill (Paul Dano), who starts it all by sinking his life savings into the stock and posting about it. When his social posts start blowing up, so does his life and the lives of everyone following him. As a stock tip becomes a movement, everyone gets rich – until the billionaires fight back, and both sides find their worlds turned upside down.”

Craig Gillespie (Cruella, Pam & Tommy) directs and produces from a script by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, which is based on Ben Mezrich‘s 2021 book The Antisocial Network. The cast includes Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, Vincent D’Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley, and Seth Rogen. Aaron Ryder and Teddy Schwarzman are also producers of the film. Michael Heimler, John Friedberg, Johnny Holland, Ben Mezrich, Lauren Schuker Blum, Andrew Swett, Rebecca Angelo, Kevin Ulrich, Cameron Winklevoss, and Tyler Winklevoss executive produce.

Dumb Money is set for a September 22 release.
