‘Deadpool 3’: Ryan Reynolds Geeks Out About Working With Hugh Jackman and Matthew Macfadyen in Threequel

With filming on Deadpool 3 set to begin in two weeks, members of the cast have recently spoken about what to expect from the film and the actors that have joined the project.

Speaking to Variety, lead actor Ryan Reynolds spoke about Hugh Jackman’s involvement, who is coming back as Wolverine for Deadpool’s first rodeo under the Marvel Studios banner, and how now it was the perfect time for the actor to put on the claws again. He said:

“We’ve wanted to this this for decades… It’s weirdly the perfect time. I never stopped [trying to get him to come back as Wolverine]. I was just pestering him like a gnat over the last many years. I believe in timing, as much as hard work and luck and all those intersections that are supposed to meet. Timing’s the big one. I think he was ready. I think he was excited.”

He then added that the character we’ll be seeing in Deadpool 3 will be a bit different from the one we saw in Fox’s X-Men films, saying:

“And what we pitched him was enough of a divergence from the character that he knows and the character that he’s left behind, that it gives him something completely new to play and something that he’s really excited to do.”

We know that the post-credits scene of Deadpool 2 will play a huge role in the threequel, and Jackman even suggested that the device Wade Wilson used to travel across different timelines will factor into the plot. He told SiriusXM earlier this year:

“It’s all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines. Now we can go back because, you know, it’s science. So, I don’t have to screw with the ‘Logan’ timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too.”

The cast of the upcoming film has now been populated by many returning actors from the previous two films, from Karan Soni and Leslie Uggams as Dopinder and Blind Al, to Morena Baccarin and Stefan Kapicic as Vanessa and Colossus, respectively. Zazie Beetz is rumored to be coming back as Domino as well, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see Josh Brolin return as Cable either. But besides all of that, we know there are two new additions to the ensemble.

Emma Corrin (The Crown) is playing the lead villain role, while Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) was reported to be a part of the film as well, in an undisclosed role. Speaking to e-talk CTV (via The Direct), Reynolds not only confirmed Macfadyen being a part of the film, but also geeked out about getting to work closely with him on a day-to-day basis:

Reynolds: “I am always rooting for him because he was one of the best actors out there. I mean, no joke.”

etalkCTV: “I mean, we hate him in ‘Succession.’”

Reynolds: “Maybe? I love him in ‘Succession.’ I can embrace a guy who straddles the line of villain and hero. And martyr. And many other things. I think Matthew Macfadyen is probably one of the most interesting actors working today. And the fact that he’s going to be on our ‘Deadpool’ set each and every day is kind of nerve-wracking for me. I’ll be starstruck.”

From Reynolds’ comments, it looks like Macfadyen will have a significant role in the film, though his relation to the plot remains to be seen. Filming for Deadpool 3 is scheduled to commence on May 1, with Shawn Levy (Free Guy) stepping in to direct. Regular writers Paul Wernick & Rhett Reese penned the latest iteration of the script along with The Marvels co-writer Zeb Wells. Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin wrote the first version; it’s unknown how much of that version of the film remains.

Deadpool 3 is currently targeting a November 8, 2024, release date, although as with everything Marvel Studios in recent times, that is subject to change.
