‘The White Lotus’: Natasha Rothwell Returning for Thailand-Set Third Season

Natasha Rothwell, who played spa manager Belinda in the first season of The White Lotus, is reteaming with series creator Mike White for the third season.

Variety revealed the news on Wednesday, though specifics about how she will factor into the plot of the third season remain under wraps. The first season, set in Hawaii, took a satirical look at racial privilege, while the second installment, out last fall, went to Italy to take a close look at modern sexual dynamics. White teased earlier this year to Variety that the third season will focus on “death and Eastern religion and spirituality.”

Rothwell, who earned an Emmy nomination for her turn as Belinda in The White Lotus season 1, is the first member of the cast to come out of the woodwork. We are not expecting anyone else to return, though; the second season only featured a connection to the first through the character of Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge). Common plotlines and acknowledgments of the events of the first season were non-existent in the second installment. Nonetheless, because there are characters that were carried over, the second season will not compete as a limited series in the Emmys.

The first two seasons of The White Lotus were able to assemble an all-star cast, including actors like Aubrey Plaza, Murray Bartlett, and Alexandra Daddario, and raised the profiles of other actors like Sydney Sweeney or Will Sharpe. With the popularity of the show higher than ever now, agencies will probably be keen to throw a lot of names in the ring for the HBO series. The first two seasons were shot at Four Seasons resorts in Hawaii and Italy, respectively, and it’s expected the third will follow suit. Thailand has four resorts from the company, located in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, and the Golden Triangle.

Mike White is back as writer and director. Filming could begin as soon as later this year.
