‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ and Wes Anderson’s ‘Asteroid City’ (Which Also Released New Trailer) Coming to the Cannes Film Festival

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

The Cannes Film Festival is already heating up this year, and the first two major releases to be premiering in South France this May have been confirmed. According to Variety, Lucasfilm will be showing off the fifth Indiana Jones installment over a month before it officially premieres in theaters, and Wes Anderson is bringing his new star-studded Asteroid City.

At this point, Lucasfilm is a recurring customer of the Cannes Film Festival — Solo: A Star Wars Story and Revenge of the Sith had showings there before their worldwide premieres, while Attack of the Clones played at the festival on the day it opened in theaters worldwide. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny playing there over a month before it opens is a bit new for the company, as the aforementioned movies were all May releases, but it makes sense. The buzz around the film is excellent, and both Lucasfilm and Disney want to get the word out as soon as possible.

A new trailer for the James Mangold-directed film should come on April 7 during the Lucasfilm Studio Showcase panel at Star Wars Celebration. A spin-off series was at one point in the works at Disney Plus, but it’s been reportedly canned, as Disney may have mandated the sub-company to solely focus on telling stories from a galaxy far, far away. That may also be the reason behind Willow not getting a second season.

The first official poster (exclusively revealed on social media by Letterboxd) and trailer for Asteroid City were unveiled this week, along with the official cast and synopsis:

The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.

Asteroid City will debut in theaters on June 16.

The official selection for the Cannes Film Festival will be revealed in the coming weeks, but we’ve been hearing whispers for a few months about Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon potentially having a few showings there. Apple and Paramount Pictures just set an October release date for that film, but it wouldn’t be the first fall release to play in the Riviera first (just last year we had Best Picture nominee Triangle of Sadness, which won the Palm d’Or in May).

Rumors about Warner Bros. playing Barbie at the elite festival have also been circulating for a while; the Greta Gerwig movie will be a summer blockbuster that, if things have gone her way, could end up being a major awards player towards the end of the year.

In other festival circuit news, Deadline is reporting that, unlike its predecessor, Dune: Part Two is not expected to play during the Venice Film Festival, as the final cut will not be done in time for early September. The film has a November 3 release date, but according to the trade, could still play at other major festivals. If VFX work is the reason behind not playing in Venice, it seems unlikely that it will make it to Toronto or Telluride (which is celebrating its 50th edition), given how close they are in time, but it could potentially play in the New York Film Festival, which The Irishman opened back in 2019, the London Film Festival, which last year closed with Glass Onion, or the Rome Film Festival, which showed Eternals in 2021.

Stay tuned for more.
