‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Is a Rocket Racoon Story, Says James Gunn

We have a little over a month to go before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 storms into theaters, and the press rounds are already starting.

Speaking to Total Film Magazine, Gunn explained how completing Rocket’s arc in the threequel was the most important thing for him when he agreed to come back:

“The most important thing for me was Rocket’s story, and then, following that, everybody else. Rocket is the secret protagonist of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and has always been the centre of it for me; and this is really fulfilling that. The reason I came back, and decided to do this movie, was because I really felt like Rocket’s story needed to be told – and it was left hanging after Vol 2. So that’s the most important thing.”

He also added that the High Evolutionary (played by Peacemaker‘s Chukwudi Iwuji) will have ties to Rocket’s backstory, as he seeks to create a super race — experimenting on Rocket was apparently part of that plan.

The writer-director said that the third film can stand on its own, but also acts as the third act of the trilogy that was started in 2014:

“[Vol. 3 is] totally self-standing… for the most part, it works as a story by itself. It’s also the ending of a trilogy. The first movie is about the mother; the second movie is about the father; and the third movie is about the self. And that is what this journey is…”

It may not be much from Gunn so far, but Pandora’s box is about to be open. The Guardians threequel will definitely have a big presence in the May magazine circuit, with Empire Magazine likely featuring it heavily in their forthcoming issue, and with more coverage in the next Total Film Magazine issue after the about-to-be-released one, where this story belongs (and that has Fast X on the cover). After two trailers, we still don’t know much about the movie; besides Gunn, we have barely heard any members of the cast talk about it (other than when they spoke their farewells after wrapping production).

Tickets could go on sale as soon as next week. April 5 will mark the final one-month countdown, a date Marvel likes to save to kick off their TV spots push and announce that audiences can already book their seats. We wouldn’t be surprised to wake up on Wednesday with a minute-long spot and the final poster for the film.
