‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Lands October Release Date

Killers of the Flower Moon

Apple has set the release date for their biggest movie of the year (and possibly one of the biggest Oscar contenders in early 2024): Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

The film will be released worldwide in partnership with Paramount Pictures, with a limited release on October 6 and a wide release on October 20. Martin Scorsese is at the helm, with Eric Roth adapting the novel of the same name by David Grann. The story is focused on the FBI investigation of a series of murders of the Osage community in Oklahoma in the 1920s, after oil was discovered in the land. The subsequent period was known as the Reign of Terror.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Ernest Burkhart, nephew of cattleman William Hale, played by Robert De Niro, in the first collaboration between Scorsese’s two muses. Lily Gladstone stars as Mollie Kyle, an Osage woman who is inheriting a large oil fortune; early buzz already positions Gladstone as a favorite for the Best Actress statue next year. Jesse Plemons stars as Tom White, a former Texas Ranger who is part of the investigation of the murders; John Lithgow and Brendan Fraser are also part of the cast.

Most recently, costume designer Jacqueline West said that in a conversation with Leonardo DiCaprio, with whom she also worked on The Revenant, the Oscar-winning actor had described the film to her as a masterpiece. She told Deadline:

“I was talking to Leo about it. We had lunch before I came here. He said, ‘Jackie, I think we worked on a masterpiece’. I thought for Leo to say that, was something. He doesn’t say that lightly. He has been in the business since he was a little boy.”

There was buzz last year that Killers of the Flower Moon could be premiering during the Cannes Film Festival, but it seems like it wasn’t the case. Whether it was because Scorsese, who famously takes a long time to edit his films, wasn’t going to meet the deadline, or because Apple and/or Paramount decided it was best to let it out in the fall to strike a full-fledged Oscar campaign, we don’t know. But it’s still possible the movie could premiere during the festival circuit in late summer/early fall. The Irishman, Scorsese’s last film, had its worldwide premiere during the New York Film Festival in 2019.
