‘Fantastic Four’ Begins Shooting Early 2024, Matt Shakman Denies Casting Rumors

Fantastic Four

With the new Prime Video series The Consultant behind him this month, Matt Shakman is getting ready to start working full-time on Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four reboot. And in a new interview, he confirmed that cameras will start rolling early next year.

Speaking to Collider, Shakman was asked if he thinks he will be directing anything else this year other than Fantastic Four. He is currently in post-production of Apple TV Plus’ MonsterVerse series (he directed the first two episodes), so he simply said:

“I don’t think so. You know, I’m still finishing up the ‘Godzilla’ project you were mentioning. We’re in post on that, and have a few more months on that. ‘Fantastic Four’ is pretty much my life until Valentine’s Day of 2025.”

When asked later about when he expects to start filming in order to meet the said release date, he simply stated “early next year”. He was also questioned about the numerous casting rumors that have been appearing online, though he didn’t have much to add, simply saying that they have nothing to announce and that they are working hard on the film:

“All the casting stuff you see is just rumors. We are early in our process there. We have nothing to announce right now, and certainly, when we do we’ll let you know.”

Those rumors have been mostly focused on Reed Richards lately, and the list has been expanding over the past few weeks, adding names like Adam Driver and Dev Patel to previously-thrown-around Diego Luna or Penn Badgley. The truth is that all of this is pure fan speculation at this point, and that the studio has likely not locked down the First Family. But if they are to start production in early 2024, they must have decided by this summer, so we should probably expect big announcements at San Diego Comic-Con — by that point, it will no longer make sense to keep it under wraps.

Fantastic Four will open in theaters on February 14, 2025. Check out the video interview here:
