‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Gets New Trailer and Character Posters

Avatar: The Way of Water final trailer

With less than a month to go until the arrival of Avatar: The Way of Water, Disney has released a new trailer and a set of character posters for the film, with fans now able to book tickets too.

Disney has announced that tickets are already on sale with a new trailer you can watch below:

The trailer offers us another extended look at the sequel, releasing 13 years after the debut of the original Avatar, while the character posters let us get acquainted with some of the new characters, and refresh our memories before its debut. Unfortunately, the posters themselves don’t have any of their names, but we’ve included them for you when you hover the cursor over each one.

In an interview with GQ Magazine, director James Cameron revealed that the idea for the movie came to him in a dream, years ago:

“I have my own private streaming service that’s better than any of that shit out there. And it runs every night for free.”

This was also the case for other iconic projects of his like The Terminator or the main scene in Aliens where Ripley confronts the xenomorph queen. The Way of Water will deal with themes of family and fighting for your home. In an interesting statement, Cameron also said that, to break even, the movie would have to become the fourth or fifth highest-grossing film of all time, which means it will have to cross the $2 billion mark at the worldwide box office. Though he might be referring to the overall production cost for Avatar 2 and 3, which were shot back-to-back. Doing so in the current climate will be a challenge to say the least, though the first movie already did it back in 2009, and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home almost got there thanks to a lengthy theatrical run and fantastic word-of-mouth.

Here is the official synopsis for the film:

“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”

Avatar: The Way of Water will debut in theatres on December 16, 2022. It will be the first of four sequels, with the next one already in post-production and Avatar 4 filming as we speak.
