‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ to Feature Six Different Animation Styles

Across the Spider-Verse

It’s been almost a year since Sony Pictures dropped the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to the 2018 Best Animated Feature. Now, the marketing campaign is finally getting some momentum.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, which also revealed a brand-new image from the movie (see above), producer Phil Lord said the following about the film’s animation style:

“The first film had one animation style that dominates the movie. This movie has six. So we’re taking those tools, adding all the things we learned on ‘The Mitchells Vs The Machines’, and then growing them further to accommodate the ambition of this movie. Which is to wow you every time you enter a new environment, and also to make sure that the style of the movie reflect the story, and that the images are driven by feelings, as opposed to some egg-headed art project. Which it also is, by the way!”

Christopher Miller then added the following to explain how these different animation styles will impact the final film:

“The two that you saw in the teaser trailer were what’s called Earth-50101, which we’re calling ‘Mumbattan’ – that’s based on an Indian comic-book look – and Nueva York from Spider-Man 2099’s world. That’s based on Syd Mead-style illustrations of what the future might look like. There’s also Gwen’s world, which is Earth-65. And that was a watercolour-wash style that’s reminiscent of the covers of her comic books.”

Across the Spider-Verse will be the first of two sequels to Into the Spider-Verse, with the second one currently scheduled for a March 29, 2024, release and titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. More details have been coming out about the first sequel over the past few weeks, including the fact that Daniel Kaluuya will be voicing Spider-Punk in the movie. Merch leaks have also revealed that characters like The Scarlet Spider will appear in the film. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and the character from the PlayStation game are rumored to be popping up too.

You can check out the first teaser for the film below. A new look should be coming out within the next few weeks, to play either in front of the Puss in Boots sequel or Avatar: The Way of Water. Stay tuned.
