Tom Holland Has Reportedly Signed a New Contract To Play Spider-Man in the MCU

Tom Holland as Spider-Man in No Way Home

Almost a year after Spider-Man: No Way Home debuted in theaters to almost unprecedented success, it looks like Tom Holland may have signed a new, shiny contract with Sony and Marvel Studios to keep playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the future.

First teased by The Cosmic Circus on Twitter, and later reported by industry insider Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic podcast, the deal could include up to six new projects, likely to be films, with three of them being a new trilogy. Details are scarce at this point, and much is based on speculation. Another writer from The Cosmic Circus said on Twitter that the deal will not include appearances on Disney Plus shows, including Daredevil: Born Again. Sneider also expressed doubts that he will be on Disney Plus anytime soon, though he wouldn’t rule out the Born Again possibility. Here’s what he said:

“Yes, I heard he has closed a deal. Again, this is not confirmed, and I did reach out to Marvel this time before we taped this podcast, and just didn’t hear back. There was just no answer, nor was I really expecting one. So I had heard, yes, another trilogy for sure. This report is suggesting six films… Sure, I might have guessed five on my own. But six makes sense. And these other movies are going to be smaller appearances in other MCU movies.

I don’t know that it is series, though. He could be [in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’], I guess he could be. There was just one report that I saw that the contract says Holland is not going to be in any series. He’s just like, ‘You wanna see Tom Holland as Spider-Man? You gotta show up at the big screen!’ And I understand that element, though it obviously would make sense for Spider-Man to show up in ‘Daredevil'”

No Way Home

No Way Home established a direct connection between the character of Spider-Man and Daredevil, when it introduced Charlie Cox into the main MCU for the first time. (Whether the Netflix Daredevil series was canonically part of the universe remains up in the air at this point.) Cox recently appeared in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and will be seen again next in Echo, coming in 2023. A guest appearance by Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters in his show would also make a lot of sense. Born Again will be 18 episodes long and will be shooting on location in New York from February through December 2023, ahead of its 2024 scheduled release on Disney Plus.

Holland last re-upped his deal with Marvel in September 2019, which granted him the third solo Spider-Man film that would later become No Way Home, and another appearance in the MCU that has yet to happen. His first deal included five films, beginning with Captain America: Civil War, two solo films, and both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. While the specific films from the new deal remain undisclosed, it is likely they will include Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

No word has come out yet on whether Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, or director Jon Watts will be coming back as well, but there’s reason for hope. Earlier this year, Sony Chairman Tom Rothman said in an interview with Deadline that they would start working on the fourth film soon, with the entire gang back — when asked specifically about Holland, Zendaya, and Watts returning, he said:

“That whole group, we hope.”

Tom Holland

Watts, meanwhile, remains busy under the Disney umbrella with his live-action Star Wars series Skeleton Crew, starring Jude Law, which will be filming in Los Angeles for another few weeks ahead of its release next year. If the deal with Tom Holland is indeed done as the reports suggest, it’s likely that the studio has already begun developing a fourth installment, which could arrive in theaters in a couple of years — let’s remember that, when Holland re-upped his deal, No Way Home was originally scheduled for July 2021. It’s also very likely, however, that Kevin Feige wanted to sign him back as soon as possible, since they are deep into developing both Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

More news might be coming out soon, especially if a new Spider-Man film is indeed in development under the Marvel Studios-Sony agreement. Let us know what you think of Tom Holland’s likely renewal!
